What Is Shelley Duvall’s Net Worth?

Shelley Duvall is one of Hollywood’s most interesting actors, a woman who achieved the pinnacle of fame in the ’70s and ’80s, only to suddenly disappear from the entertainment scene altogether. In spite of the fact that Duvall has chosen to exit Hollywood, many of her movies remain popular, including the disturbing horror classic The Shining. Still, many fans are looking to Duvall’s past to learn what they can about how she became popular and why she decided to retire from acting so suddenly.

Shelley Duvall was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1949. Raised as the oldest of four children, Duvall and her family moved all around Texas for the first few years of her life, eventually settling in Houston. An artistic child, Duvall was drawn to a career in science, and originally planned on being a nutritionist. Still, Duvall’s unique appearance eventually brought her to a career in film. Duvall moved to Hollywood and began acting in a variety of avant-garde films, including McCabe & Mrs. Miller and Nashville.

By the end of the ’70s, Shelley Duvall was a popular presence in Hollywood and had been honored with several awards, including the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. A few of Duvall’s most high-profile roles in the late ’70s and early ’80s include parts in movies such as Popeye, The Shining, and Time Bandits. However, by the late ’80s and ’90s, Duvall had taken a significant step back from moviemaking, and after a few years, she dropped off the map entirely. Her last movie role was in 2002, and she hasn’t acted in a professional project since then — although she has made at least one buzzworthy television talk show appearance.

In the 2000s, many of Shelley Duvall’s fans were wondering what had happened to the vibrant star. In 2016, Duvall sat down with Dr. Phil McGraw, dispelling some of the rumors that had been swirling in her absence from the spotlight. In the interview, Duvall told Dr. Phil that she was “very sick,” stating that has struggled with mental illness for years.

The famous TV doctor offered her help, including trying to set up mental health check-ins with her, but Duvall refused the assistance. In fact, Duvall remained out of view until February 11th, 2021, when she sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to admit that living with the success she achieved after The Shining was difficult and that she intentionally lives her life out of the spotlight, along with her partner, musician Dan Gilroy.

Although Shelley Duvall no longer works in Hollywood, she still made some money while acting. In fact, Celebrity Net Worth reports Duvall’s current net worth as being around $500,000. While it doesn’t come close to her cos-star from The Shining Jack Nicholson’s $400 million fortune, it is still an impressive sum for someone who hasn’t acted professionally in two decades.

These days, it is looking more and more unlikely that Shelley Duvall will ever act again. It seems as though she has made the mark on Hollywood that she wishes to make and that she finds much more fulfillment out of the spotlight than in it.
