Money Heist creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato debuted Sky Rojo, one of Netflix’s newest Spanish-language TV shows, on March 19. Though it has yet to take off in the U.S., it’s been in the top 5 in Spain, Argentina, Chile, Italy, and Peru, and outranked The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in one case. Currently, the series has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nearly two weeks after its season 1 premiere, Sky Rojo just received a season 2 release date.

‘Sky Rojo’ left viewers on a cliffhanger

In this high-octane thriller, viewers were introduced to Wendy (Lali Espósito), Coral (Verónica Sanchez), and Gina (Yany Prado), three sex workers who find themselves in a life-or-death situation with their pimp. Trapped in a life of sexual exploitation under Romeo’s thumb, they’re forced to run after Gina’s fight with him gets out of control.

The ladies bond with each other, fight, and face a few close calls while on the run from Romeo’s sadistic goons, Christian and Moisés. And others who have run into the trio have either been hurt or killed along the way.

It’s a bloody, often frantic action-thriller, but it’s easy to root for Wendy, Coral, and Gina as they fight through inner turmoil and for their freedom.

By the end of season 1, Romeo awakened from his coma, chased down the girls, and almost took them out. Viewers learned about Coral’s complicated relationship with him and Moisés, and that threw a wrench in things in the final episode.

Romeo almost died, but she began to perform chest compressions on him. His eyes opened. Now what?

Is Moisés really dead? Will Christian dig him out of that giant hole? Will Wendy, Gina, and Coral find anyone else who can help them get out of this alive? More importantly, will these women ever get a chance to heal?

‘Sky Rojo’ Season 2 arrives in July

Pina and the rest of the Sky Rojo team hit social media to announce that season 2 drops on Netflix on July 23. As far as what’s ahead, the only clue Netflix offered is that the chase continues. That means it’s about to go down at Club Novias and beyond.

The series will continue to explore not only each character’s story arc, but also the world of human sex trafficking. Pina and Lobato interviewed pimps, women, and others involved in the illegal sex trade to gain insight into how their minds work.

During an interview with Kinowetter, Lobato shared how Romeo represents the mentality that many traffickers have that makes them think their behavior is acceptable. “There are really people out there that believe this is a business. They have no moral compass when it comes to this topic,” she said.

For fans, it makes it easier to feel compassion for Wendy, Coral, and Gina, the latter of whom was sold into service by her own family.

Viewers can currently stream the first eight episodes of Sky Rojo on Netflix and tune in on July 23 for part 2.
