Bad news, Spider-Man fans — Sony delayed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, again. The studio originally pushed back the release date for the sequel due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but its latest delay is because of another unforeseen circumstance.
Sony delays ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ to 2023
Per Entertainment Weekly, Sony delayed the premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to June 2, 2023. The sequel was originally scheduled to release on April 8, 2022, but the studio pushed that date back to Oct. 7, 2022, because of COVID-19.
Not only did Sony announce that they postponed the sequel’s premiere date, but they also shared that they dropped “Part One” from its title. The film was initially called Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), and now it’s just titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
However, the second sequel is still titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part II). And with the news that Sony is delaying Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse came a release date for Part II — March 29, 2024.
Christopher Miller reveals why Sony delayed ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’
Following the news of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s delay, one of the sequel’s co-writers and producers, Christopher Miller, jumped on Twitter to explain.
He wrote, “More time to make it great.”
Phil Lord, another co-writer, retweeted his colleague’s original post. So it seems like the creative process is causing the release date’s hold up. The creators of the sequel just need more time to make it the best film it can be, which we’re sure fans will appreciate.
The world has already waited more than three years for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, so one more year is practically no time at all. And hopefully, the highly-anticipated sequel will be worth the wait.
Everything we know about the upcoming sequel
Aside from Sony delaying Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, much is unknown about the sequel. The cast includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew. Moore, Steinfeld, Johnson, and Isaac will reprise their roles from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, while Rae is a new addition to the cast.
The synopsis reads, “Miles Morales/Spider-Man goes on an adventure across the multiverse with Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman and a new team of Spider-People who must face a powerful villain.”
Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham co-wrote the sequel, and Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson co-directed it.
Lord and Miller told Entertainment Weekly, “Miles’ story is an epic. We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise, we realized it was two movies instead of one. Every dimension looks and feels radically different from all the others. They all look like they were drawn by a different artist.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse premieres exclusively in theaters on June 2, 2023.
