How did Kang Sae-byeok die in ‘Squid Game’?

In episode eight of Squid Game, the fan-favorite character Sae-byeok, played by actor HoYeon Jung, met an unwelcome fate. There are only three remaining players at this point in the storyline: Seong Gi-hun, Sae-byeok, and Cho Sang-woo. The character managed to survive the glass bridge game, but Sae-byeok was fatally wounded in the process.

After a final meal and a change of clothes, they return to the housing area. What transpires next will be called one of the K-drama’s biggest betrayals. Gi-hun now sees Sang-woo as a ruthless person who would kill to survive. All the players stole a knife from dinner and are on high alert if Sang-woo decides to take brutal action.

Gi-hun stays by Sae-byeok’s side. When seeing a chance to attack Sang-woo, Sae-byeok stops him and says he is not a monster. Realizing she is dying, Gi-hun calls for help, but it becomes his biggest mistake. It alerted Sang-woo, who seized the opportunity to slash her throat and kill her.

Creator teases Sae-byeok could return as a twin in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2

According to Deadline, director and creator Hwang gave some insight on what could happen in Squid Game Season 2 with Sae-byeok. While fans have often theorized how the character could return after her tragic demise, Hwang gave a theory never heard before.

While on the red carpet for the PGA Awards, Hwang teased, “Let’s say maybe she has a twin sister, you’ll see.” The concept is one fans have not heard from the creator before. He explains he is looking into possibilities for bringing back certain dead characters for Squid Game Season 2.

Jung also joined in on the possibility for her character by adding, “I could change my hair color. Let’s do a little like plastic surgery.” The creator does explain bringing back characters might be difficult because they are, in fact, dead, but he will have to get creative.

Some of the characters who met a deadly fate were Ali Abdul, Han Mi-nyeo, Jang Deok-su, Cho Sang-woo, and police detective Hwang Jun-ho. Actor Lee Jung-jae also teased his possible theory of how characters could return by saying the guards work quickly to perform surgery and revive them.
