Back in 1980, Star Wars fans were pumped to see how The Empire Strikes Back would build upon the first film. In addition to a certain paternal twist, the movie introduced a variety of new worlds and characters that forever changed the saga. However, Boba Fett stands out as one of the most impactful, despite having very little screentime and few lines of dialogue.

The bounty hunter with the iconic Mandalorian armor soon became a fan favorite. So when George Lucas went back to make the Star Wars prequels, he included a backstory involving a young Boba Fett (Daniel Logan). Now, the Disney+ series The Mandalorian could be taking a similar approach. If it does, Logan could conceivably return to the role in season 2.

‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 will tap into established ‘Star Wars’ lore

When Disney announced The Mandalorian, the title instantly led Star Wars fans to speculate whether it would center on Boba Fett. After all, the character was supposed to get his own standalone film under director James Mangold before that project was scrapped. Alas, Pedro Pascal’s anti-hero was ultimately revealed to be Din Djarin, a completely new character.

But the episode titled “Chapter 5: The Gunslinger” ends with a mysterious caped figure approaching the presumedly dead assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Attentive fans have noted the spur-jangling sound the stranger makes as he or she approaches, which directly echoes that of Boba Fett in the original trilogy.

If this is the case, Boba Fett wouldn’t be the only established Star Wars character to join The Mandalorian. Although the show’s first season focused exclusively on new additions to the saga, season 2 is looking to tie into the lore much more closely. Rosario Dawson will play Star Wars: The Clone Wars breakout Ahsoka Tano in her live-action debut, for instance.

The same actor played Boba Fett in the movies and animated series

But for Boba Fett, Lucasfilm should face an easy choice deciding who should play him. Logan, after all, didn’t only play the character as a young boy in 2002’s Attack of the Clones. From 2010 to 2012, he also provided Boba Fett’s voice on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Moreover, he has remained active in the Star Wars fan community as a regular guest at conventions.

Dave Filoni — who spearheaded Star Wars: The Clone Wars — is also one of the chief creative voices behind The Mandalorian. Filoni serves as a writer, director, and executive producer on the show, perhaps second only to creator Jon Favreau behind the scenes. So Logan already has a connection with the team behind the show, making his casting even more likely.

Plus, Logan is roughly still the right age to play Boba Fett. According to Wookieepedia, the character was born 32 years before A New Hope. In The Mandalorian then, he’d be about 41. While the 32-year-old Logan is a bit younger than that, the role would involve mostly voice acting anyway. And if he does show his face, some make-up could always add a few more years.

‘Star Wars’ has previously re-integrated stars of the prequels

The casting of Dawson as Ahsoka might seem like it would hurt Logan’s chances of reprising his role. Rather than casting longtime Ahsoka voice actor Ashley Eckstein, Disney chose a bigger name to take her into live action. By this logic then, Logan might have a hard time joining the cast of The Mandalorian Season 2.

But even under Disney, the Star Wars saga has continually taken steps to maintain consistency. For example, Rogue One saw Jimmy Smits and Genevieve O’Reilly reprise their prequel trilogy roles. Ray Park returned as Darth Maul in Solo, with Sam Witwer back to voice the character from the animated shows. Even Eckstein’s voice appeared in The Rise of Skywalker.

Fans still have no idea for certain if Boba Fett will indeed play a role in The Mandalorian Season 2. But it feels inevitable for the most popular character to don Mandalorian armor to appear. Likewise, Logan is ideally positioned to play the character in live-action. Even if he only contributes his voice, the actor could prove once and for all Boba Fett did, in fact, survive the Sarlacc.
