When Stephenie Meyer finally released Midnight Sun to the world in 2020, she had no idea how fans would receive it. The book, which is a retelling of Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective, is over a decade in the making and while there was lots of hype about it initially, many fans had all but forgotten its existence. However, it quickly became clear that Twilight fans were all too happy to revisit Bella and Edward’s love story. In fact, some people are hoping that the book gets adapted into a movie.

Though Meyer wasn’t anticipating it, her four books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn served as the inspiration for five blockbuster films. The films made Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner (who played Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner) household names and made hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. Since the films were so incredibly successful, some fans are hoping that Midnight Sun will receive similar treatment.

‘Twilight’ fans are hoping that ‘Midnight Sun’ get adapted into a movie

But is there any possibility or even a need for Midnight Sun to be adapted into a movie? After all, fans are familiar with almost all of the story. The only glaring difference is the perspective from which the story is told. There isn’t much new information that could lend itself to an entire movie, but that certainly hasn’t stopped fans from hoping. But what does Meyer think about the possibility?

On her website, Meyer addressed fan speculation that Midnight Sun could one day become a film. While the writer didn’t rule it out completely, she was very open about the fact that turning the book into a movie wouldn’t be the easiest endeavor. ‘I don’t know if Midnight Sun will ever be adapted,” the Twilight author wrote. “There are some unique challenges with seeing the world from Edward’s perspective, most notably the fact that he is always hearing voices in his head.”

Stephenie Meyer, who authored the ‘Twilight’ books weighs in

While Meyer seems to be ambivalent about Midnight Sun being adapted for the screen, she seems to think it would work better as a TV series rather than a movie. According to the writer, a TV show would allow viewers to get a clearer depiction of Edward’s unique, vampiric, viewpoint. “Personally, I think it would make more sense to film it for television so that there was time to really explore Edward’s world,” Meyer shared.

Why the cast of the ‘Twilight’ movies couldn’t return for ‘Midnight Sun’

But even Midnight Sun did get adapted for TV shows, fans shouldn’t expect the cast of the original films to reprise their roles. Even if the actors were interested in revisiting Forks, their age limits their ability to tell the story in an authentic way. “But if we did ever adapt it, I don’t think there is any way we could use the same cast,” Meyer shared. “Bella and Edward are seventeen—both Rob and Kristen are in their thirties now.”

Only time will tell if Midnight Sun becomes anything more than a book. But we’d wager that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
