The Suicide Squad debuted in theaters and on HBO Max this summer, but fans still can’t stop talking about the funny, hard-hitting superhero flick. With a star-studded cast, including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rooker, and Viola Davis, The Suicide Squad was written and directed by James Gunn, the creative mind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Upon The Suicide Squad‘s August release, Gunn took to Twitter to chat about the movie with fans. He even opened up about the ending and why he chose to conclude it the way he did.

When fans heard DC was developing another story based on the assassin team Suicide Squad, many were nervous, and for a good reason. The 2016 film, Suicide Squad, received poor reviews from critics and was generally slammed by fans for the disjointed storyline and uneven performances.

Still, the announcement that director James Gunn would lead the project raised optimism. After all, Gunn has a history of creating successful ensemble superhero films, as he is the creative force behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

The Suicide Squad didn’t make big money at the box office. Still, fans have praised the film for including witty dialogue throughout and a more interesting storyline for the fan-favorite character Harley Quinn.

Ultimately, it seems Gunn resurrected a franchise that was dead in the water for several years.

What did James Gunn say about the ending of ‘The Suicide Squad’?

Although The Suicide Squad brims with action-packed moments, intensive firefights, and hardcore fight scenes, the film ends on a quiet, rather heartfelt note. Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba, shares a moment with a rat.

James Gunn took to Twitter in August after the film was released to reveal he had many endings to choose from.

“I had a thousand possible endings,” he wrote, “but I always came back to the simple act of #Bloodsport petting the rat, accepting just a bit of his own innate goodness.”

Fans sounded off in the comments. One wrote, “Honestly? It’s perfect. The entire movie was. I enjoyed the hell outta it. You rock.”

Another said, “If Bloodsport got his own movie or a show … I’d want it in your hands completely.”

There have been no announced projects featuring Elba’s character, Bloodsport. However, fans who enjoyed John Cena’s turn as the ruthless Peacemaker will soon get to see even more of him.

That’s because Gunn is attached to write, develop, and launch a spinoff series based on the mercenary. Peacemaker will start streaming on HBO Max in January 2022.

And Gunn recently confirmed on Twitter that he would continue his association with DC via a yet-unnamed project.

In addition to his plans with DC, Gunn is also working on some projects for Marvel, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder.

The acclaimed director has clearly found his niche. And considering his full docket for the foreseeable future, fans can count on much more of his witty direction.
