The first two episodes of Superman & Lois Season 2 teased a new villain emerging from Smallville’s X-Kryptonite mines. After piecing together telling clues, many fans believed it would be Doomsday. But now viewers know those hints were just misdirection.

In Episode 3, the military heads down to the mines to capture the being, who strikes back at every advance. Eventually, Bizarro (Tyler Hoechlin) emerges, donning a scarier version of Superman’s face and wearing a backward “S” on his chest.

When Clark arrives, the two go head to head. John Henry Irons (Wole Parks) comes in for an assist. But it’s going to take a lot more to bring this sinister Superman doppelganger down.

Who is Bizarro in DC Comics?

Bizarro is a DC Comics anti-hero who first appeared in the 1958 issue of Superboy. There have been many versions of the villain in the comics, but most are mirror versions of Superman.

In his varied iterations, Bizarro has different origin stories. The pre-crisis version is a duplicate created by General Zod to take over Krypton. And in later comics, he’s a villainous Superman clone created by Lex Luthor.

Bizarro is the opposite of Superman, so his powers are also reversed. He has freeze vision, heat and vacuum breath, the ability to see behind his head, and can’t see through anything but lead.

And while green Kryptonite weakens Superman, Bizarro is strengthened by it. However, like the superhero, his powers are activated under Earth’s yellow sun.

In the comics, Bizarro is affiliated with the  Legion of Doom, Injustice League, Secret Society of Super Villains, Superman Revenge Squad, and Red Hood and the Outlaws. And he also encounters Bizarro versions of Lois and Supergirl.

But by now, fans know that Superman & Lois doesn’t always follow the comics. And the show will likely create its own origin story and arc for its version of Bizarro.

Bizarro won’t be the only villain of ‘Superman & Lois’ Season 2

Superman & Lois delivered Bizarro in Episode 3. But according to showrunner Todd Helbing, another villain is on the way.

“Superman is dealing with an enemy that is going to be a massive headache for him,” he said in an interview with SFX Magazine ahead of the premiere. “There are multiple villains. Both villains affect Clark and Lois personally.”

Helbing noted that both villains will affect Lois (Bitsie Tulloch) and Clark individually. But he teased the whole family will need to work together to take them on.

“We start out with one villain that is really more Superman while setting up the Lois villain,” Helbing teased. “They are not working together, but they handoff in a cool way this season. One of them comes to the forefront and, in a lot of ways, is more powerful than the other one. It will take the whole team, in a different way than last year, to stop this person.”

New episodes of Superman & Lois air Tuesdays on The CW.
