Sydney Sweeney, Barbie Ferreira, and Julia Garner Are Among the Stars Who Have Auditioned to Play Madonna In a Biopic

For years, the idea of a Madonna biopic has floated around Hollywood. Now, the project is finally happening, with Madge at the helm. Several actors have auditioned for the movie, including 'Euphoria' stars Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreira and 'Ozark' actor Julia Garner.

Madonna‘s life story spans decades and serves as a case study in becoming a pop superstar. A movie about the singer’s life is on the way, and to bring her story to life, she’s floating a number of different actors to possibly play a younger version of herself — including Euphoria stars Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreira.

Madonna is making a biopic about her life

Madonna confirmed that a biopic about her life was coming back in 2020. The movie, developed by Universal Pictures, will be co-directed and co-written by Madge herself. To bring the project to the screen, she’s teaming up with Diablo Cody, who won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2007 for Juno.

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a press statement. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

She’s called the project a “visual biography” and will chronicle her rise to stardom and time in the spotlight.

Several actors have auditioned to play Madonna in the movie

In February 2022, Madonna shared a clip on Instagram of herself dancing to her 1983 song “Burning Up” and revealed that the movie was in the audition phase.

“Auditions for my film are a surreal experience,” she captioned the video. “But I’m enjoying dancing to the Classics!!” In another Instagram post, she hinted that Uncut Gems actor Julia Fox could be the one to play her, as she captioned the image “Went to dinner with Julia to talk about my movie and some other folks showed up.”

Back in 2021, Madonna also considered the idea of Midsommar star Florence Pugh playing her. “She’s definitely up there on the list, if she’ll have me,” she told AP.

Other names have been thrown into the audition mix. According to The Ankler, sources report that Euphoria actors Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreira and Ozark star Julia Garner have also auditioned for the role.

Madonna Says Writing the Script For Her Biopic Was ‘The Most Challenging, Draining Experience’ of Her Life

Madonna is taking the project very seriously

Given how iconic Madona’s story is, the “Vogue” singer wants to make sure that the movie turns out right. She spoke about the process of writing the movie in a 2021 interview with Maluma for Rolling Stone.

“Writing my script is the most draining, challenging experience I’ve ever had,” she said honestly. “It’s kind of like psychotherapy in a way, because I have to remember every detail from my childhood till now. Remembering all the things that made me decide to be who I am, my journey as an artist, my decision to leave Michigan to go to New York, all the things that happened to me when I was young and naïve, my relationships with my family and friends, watching many of my friends die — sometimes, I have writing sessions where I go to bed and I just want to cry. You know what I mean?”

Madge doesn’t look back on things with sadness, however. Instead, she’s proud of how far she’s come, and wants to bring that story to the big screen. “The thing is, I realize I forgot a lot of things, and reliving, digging deep, trying to recall emotions that I felt in certain moments, both joyful and traumatic experiences ,  I realize I’ve lived a crazy life.”
