The 2022 Grammy Awards were filled with plenty of memorable moments, not the least of which was SZA and Doja Cat’s win for their hit single “Kiss Me More.” Their acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the night for a few reasons, including SZA’s long walk to the stage on crutches.

SZA and Doja Cat won a Grammy Award for ‘Kiss Me More’

Prior to 2022, both Doja Cat and SZA had been nominated at the Grammy Awards numerous times, including both for Best New Artist. They finally won their first award in 2022 for Best Pop Vocal Duo/Group Performance in 2022 their No. 1 song “Kiss Me More.”

Both Doja and SZA were thrilled at the accomplishment and recognition from the Recording Academy. And just like the song, their acceptance speech was unforgettable.

SZA needed crutches to walk to the stage to accept her Grammy

When Doja Cat and SZA were announced as the winners, SZA was shown hobbling up to the stage on crutches as Lady Gaga helped her with her long train. Doja Cat, meanwhile, was rushing back to the stage to make it in time.

In an interview after winning the award, SZA revealed that she had only just sustained her injury hours before she went to the Grammys.

“It’s very funny because I fell out of bed right before it was time to leave and get ready for this,” SZA said. “Like the day before, but that’s the way it goes.”

“Everything awesome in my life has always come with something like very random, but it just adds to the energy,” she joked.

Doja almost missed their big moment

After SZA made it to the microphone on crutches, Doja Cat ran up to the stage to join her. Doja nearly missed the moment because she was using the restroom.

“Girl, you went to the bathroom for like five minutes, are you serious?” SZA said jokingly to the “Say So” rapper.

For her part, Doja made light of her bladder being so weak at such an important moment. “Listen, I have never taken such a fast piss in my whole life,” she said, catching her breath.

SZA confirmed her ankle was broken

In an Instagram Story after the ceremony, SZA revealed that her ankle injury was more serious than she thought. “Welp, it’s confirmed broken … I thought it was just sprained, she said, according to Billboard. “I was NOT missing that carpet.”

In another photo, she shared an X-ray of her ankle with the caption “Chipped the corner of my ankle bone right off doing NOTHING.”

SZA has a new album on the way

In her post-award interview, SZA also revealed an exciting, less upsetting piece of news: her next album, the follow-up to her smash 2017 debut CTRL, will be out soon.

She described her sophomore album as one that appeals to all. “It’s probably my most unisex project yet, if that makes sense,” she said. “It’s for everyone.”
