While Taylor Swift may pour her heart out in her songs for the world to see, she’s extremely tight-lipped about her relationship with her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. The pair are rarely seen out together and have made it a point to keep their relationship private. Swift has shared that if she talks about her relationship publicly, people get the idea that it is open for discussion when it isn’t. However, fans are able to get small glimpses into Swift’s relationship if they pay close enough attention to her music.

Swift is known for using her personal life as inspiration for her songwriting. Having written of co-written every one of her songs, Swift often gives fans peaks into her friendships, childhood, family life, fears, and of course her romantic relationships. Though Swift hasn’t necessarily confirmed which songs are about her boyfriend, fans have ascertained that more than a few are about Alwyn. “peace”, “Call It What You Want”, “Lover”, “False God”, and more are all songs that have been linked to Swift’s relationship with Alwyn.

Fans also had a chance to learn a bit more about Swift’s relationship with Alwyn through her documentary, Miss Americana. The “hoax” singer shared that her boyfriend taught her how to live a more normal life, which was foreign to her since she’s spent more than half of her life in the spotlight. Swifties were touched when Swift seemed to be mouthing “I love you” to Alwyn as she played a new song for him. The Red artist even caused speculation that she and Alwyn were engaged after fans spotted a diamond on her ring finger during a scene in the documentary.

Still, Swift has stayed pretty reticent about her relationship, choosing to not even clarify if Alwyn is her boyfriend or fiancé. But in a recent conversation with Paul McCartney for Rolling Stone, Swift shared a little more about her relationship with Alwyn. The songwriter revealed that her boyfriend “absolutely” sympathizes with her about the media circus that often surrounds her life. But she also revealed that being with the actor has allowed her to restructure the way she lives her life to make it more private.

“But I think that in knowing him and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real-life and less like just a storyline to be commented on in tabloids,” Swift shared about how being with Alwyn has shifted her perspective. “Whether that’s deciding where to live, who to hang out with, when to not take a picture — the idea of privacy feels so strange to try to explain, but it’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy.”

While Swift’s life will likely never be completely normal, it’s great that she’s created something with Alwyn that feels like it belongs to her exclusively. We’re sure her fans are happy she’s found a partner despite not knowing the details of their relationship.
