‘Ted Lasso’ Star Brett Goldstein Didn’t Realize He Dropped F-Bombs During His Emmys Acceptance Speech: ‘It’s All a Blur’
When Brett Goldstein took to the stage to accept his award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the 2021 Emmys, he dropped a couple of f-bombs that had to be bleeped from the show. Goldstein later admitted that the whole moment was “a blur” and he wasn’t entirely sure what he said.

Goldstein gave a brief acceptance speech when his name was called as the winner of the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category. “I was very, very specifically told I’m not allowed to swear, so this speech is going to be f***ing short,” Goldstein said.
“To my teammates that I’m nominated with and all my team,” he continued, adding. “This cast made me sick, they’re so good.”
He rattled off some names of loved ones before directing his attention to those involved with Ted Lasso.
“And lastly, I want to say to Jason [Sudeikis], Bill [Lawrence], Brendan [Hunt] and Joe Kelly, thank you for creating this show, and providing me to be part of it,” Goldstein said. “It has been one of the greatest honors, privileges, and privileges — I just said that twice. But it’s a double privilege. It’s the most privileged privilege and pleasures of my life.”
Goldstein wrapped it up, saying, “And this is the f***ing icing on the cake. I’m so sorry. Please have me back! Thank you very much.”
The ‘Ted Lasso’ star was stunned by the win
While the speech seemed pretty on-brand for Goldstein’s character Roy Kent, the actor later seemed a bit stunned to find out what he had even said in his speech.
In an interview with ET following his win, Goldstein said, “That does not sound like me,” about cursing during his speech, joking, “That sounds like an accusation that cannot stand.”
The actor admitted, “Quite a number of people over the build-up to this were saying, ‘Just listen man, this is a big show and it’s like an afternoon show and you really, really shouldn’t swear.’ And I was like, ‘OK.’”
Hannah Waddingham, who also won an Emmy for her role on Ted Lasso, found out from ET that she also cursed during her acceptance speech. “My parents are going to be so disappointed,” she said.
Goldstein noted, “Don’t invite us on the stage if you don’t want us to swear,” and shared that he was in shock when he was announced as the winner. “I actually was like, ‘Who is it? Who’d they say?’ And then everyone stood up and they were looking at me,” he explained. “Thank god they had it written on the thing, because I was like, ‘Oh s**t.'”
When the actor answered questions in the press room, he shared that the moment was “a blur” so he wasn’t sure what he said during the speech. Being the first winner of the night came as a surprise as well, since Goldstein assumed “there’d be some time to settle into the ceremony.”
One reporter asked what Goldstein had said during the speech that was bleeped out. “Oh, did they bleep it? Oh no! Really?” he asked. “Truthfully, I don’t know what I said. It’s all a blur, but it was probably swearing, right?”
