‘The Amazing Race’ Season 33: Caro Viehweg Claims She and Ray Gantt ‘Were a Mess’ While Racing
CBS‘s reality competition series, The Amazing Race, can sometimes bring the worst out in people. There’s no doubt that it constantly tests relationships as they race around the world in a high-stress situation. And no one knows that better than Caro Viehweg and Ray Gantt from The Amazing Race Season 33.
Caro and Ray competed in ‘The Amazing Race’ Season 33
The Amazing Race Season 33 cast featured 11 teams who began their journey in early 2020. Caro and Ray were among the new racers competing to take home the grand prize.
The couple met on Love Island Season 1. Caro was one of the original islanders, whereas Ray didn’t appear until a few episodes into the season. They immediately hit it off and stayed together until the finale, where viewers at home awarded them third place. After Love Island, they returned home. Unfortunately, Caro and Ray lived on opposite sides of the States, so they jumped at the chance to try to win a million dollars together in The Amazing Race.
Caro and Ray were steady in the first three legs of The Amazing Race Season 33. They came in fifth place in the first episode, sixth place in the second, and fifth place again in the third leg. Unfortunately, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced production to shut down for 19 months. And Caro and Ray were unable to return to the race once production restarted.
Caro posted her reactions to episode 3
Caro runs her own YouTube channel, where she vlogs about her life. And while her episodes of The Amazing Race Season 33 aired, Caro posted her reactions to the legs. During her video for episode 3, which she named “WE WERE A MESS. The Amazing Race Season 33 Episode 3 [Reaction Video],” Caro explained why she freaked out while Ray drove.
“I feel like, in my past life, I think I died in a car accident because I get anxiety in the car,” she shared. “And we were in the highway, and [Ray] is stalling in the highway. And I’m literally like, ‘I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die!’ In the highway, there were trucks passing by us, and I’m just freaking out. I should have just kept quiet because I don’t know how to drive, so who am I to speak or say anything?”
Then, Caro reacted to the part in the episode where she tries to apologize to Ray for freaking out.
“Watching that just cringes me a little bit because I’m like, [Ray’s] literally pushing me off him,” Caro said. “You can see me and him were not in harmony with each other. We were not compatible as a match [or] as a team. It’s kind of hard to watch it. I’m not even going to lie.”
Caro and Ray broke up sometime after filming The Amazing Race Season 33.
Why couldn’t Caro and Ray return to ‘The Amazing Race’ Season 33?
Many fans believed that Caro and Ray’s breakup was why they didn’t return to the race. However, in another YouTube video, Caro explained the real reason why they could not come back.
“I got a call from the producers,” she revealed. “And they were saying, ‘Caro, we can’t have you go back on The Amazing Race because of your German passport.’ So, around this time, the U.S. created a restriction where they aren’t letting anybody in unless you are a U.S. citizen. So, legally, because of COVID, I was not allowed to go back into the states with a German passport because the borders were closed.”
Caro continued, “And, fun fact, I believe I’m the first non-U.S. citizen to run The Amazing Race. I’m a German and Brazilian citizen. For that reason, I was not able to reenter back into the race.”
