Throughout The Bachelorette Season 17 finale, many Bachelor Nation fans weren’t sure whether Blake and Katie were going to get engaged. The contestant was depicted as uncertain, particularly after the lead revealed how Greg Grippo left. But in the end, Blake proposed to Katie so they could start their happily ever after together.

Meanwhile, Blake opened up during “After the Final Rose” and shared the moment he knew he wanted to propose to Katie.

“When I started looking at the rings is when it started to hit me as to what this was and the magnitude of it and the weight of it. I wasn’t looking at it as an engagement. I was like, ‘If I do this, this is gonna be the only time I do this. And so this is marriage. This isn’t just an engagement. This is marriage for me.’”

He added, “So I just wanted to make sure that I was making the right decision for me, for us, and was that getting engaged today? And ultimately, I believe that that was the case. So we did it.”

Then Katie shared how she felt about the moment of uncertainty surrounding the proposal.

“I’m glad that he took the time to take it seriously,” she said. “It is an engagement. Yes, we didn’t have a lot of time with each other, but it does show how serious he was taking this. And he actually was maybe unsure for a moment. It just makes it that much more special that he meant it.”

Katie Thurston on whether she’d still be together with Blake Moynes if he didn’t propose

In the Aug. 10 episode of the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast, Katie was asked how she would feel if Blake came to the final rose ceremony and ended The Bachelorette without an engagement. Katie shared that she would have left with Blake in the finale “no matter what,” but she still would’ve felt a “little sting” in her heart.

“Overall, I was going to be happy and leave with him no matter what,” Katie said. “There was going to be this… I don’t know about resentment. I don’t even know who it’d be towards. But I went through so much over the course of that time to then walk away with a boyfriend, it’s just like I could’ve just been on a freaking dating app at this point. It would’ve been a lot easier.”

She continued, “An engagement is a very serious commitment versus a boyfriend and girlfriend. So it just shows the confidence that he has in us, which I appreciate. He’s betting on us going forward. It’s hard to say. I would’ve been happy, but there would’ve been this little sting in my heart. And I don’t know how quickly I would’ve recovered from it.”

Then when former bachelorette Becca Kufrin noted that Katie wouldn’t have found Blake if she just downloaded an app, the current lead reminded fans that her contestant contacted her before the show.

“As everyone knows, he was in my DMs,” Katie said and laughed.
