Though the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic brought the entertainment industry to its knees, it appears that things are on the upswing. After months of hiatus due to the virus, Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattison and Zoë Kravitz among others, is finally getting back to filming with a new release date slated for October 1, 2021.

While fans of the Caped Crusader are going to have to wait just a little longer to see the Cloverfield director’s vision of Gotham come to life, there is some very good news hidden in the midst of this.

This new vision of one of the most legendary superheroes of all time is about to spawn some distinct material. In fact, HBO Max has already ordered a prequel series to the film.

Inside Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’

Prior to the pandemic bringing production to a close, The Batman had only filmed about 25 percent of their scenes. However, eager fans have thankfully pieced together what we can expect to see from the film, and Reeves version of Bruce Wayne’s story.

From what we understand, The Batman will follow the 30-year-old, billionaire socialite and heir of Wayne Enterprises. Though Batman is committed to protected Gotham series, at this point in his life has no experience with crime-fighting or being a superhero. Reeves told Nerdist,

I just felt like well, what I’d love to do is to get a version of this Batman character where he’s not yet fully formed. Where there’s something to do in this context with who that guy would be in this world today and to ground him in all of these broken ways. Because at the end of the day, this guy is doing all of this to deal with trauma in his past.

HBO Max’s ‘Gotham P.D.’ will be a prequel to ‘The Batman’

Though we have to wait more than a year to see how Pattinson will bring Bruce Wayne to life, Reeves just gave Batman fans something else to look forward to.

The Batman is getting a companion TV series on HBO Max called Gotham P.D. and we have all of the details surrounding it. We already know that the series is slated to debut in July 2021 and that it will be a police procedural set in Gotham. Now, Reeves has given us even more tea. At DC FanDome in Aug. 2020, he revealed via TV Line,

The idea is we go back to Year 1 and Year 1 is the beginning. It’s the first appearance of this masked vigilante that unsettles the city. You start to see the story through the POV of these corrupt cops, and one in particular. And the story is actually a battle for [the cop’s] soul.

Will Robert Pattinson appear in ‘Gotham P.D.’?

Though Gotham P.D. is set one year prior to The Batman, Reeves has not revealed if fans will get a glimpse of Pattison or any other faces from the film in the series. Reeves explained, Batman’s role in the show as “a myth … building in the background.”

However, seeing this world come to life before it expands in the movie is certainly enticing.
