The Blacklist Season 9 picked back up two years after the death of Liz Keen. Fans never saw Raymond Reddington or any members of the task force deal with Liz’s death, but that’s all about to change. The series will return with episode 7 in 2022. The new episode will show flashbacks to Donald Ressler in the aftermath of Liz’s death. It could be an interesting story, but plenty of fans aren’t excited to see it.

‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 Episode 7 will be a flashback episode

Donald Ressler has been through a lot over the years. His fiance Audrey Bidwell was shot and killed in season 1. Ressler also became addicted to prescription painkillers. He was romantically involved with Liz Keen, but she too died in the season 8 finale. Fans never got to see exactly what effect Liz’s death had on Ressler — until now.

The Blacklist Season 9 Episode 7 will finally tell that story. The official synopsis reads, “In a series of flashbacks, Ressler recalls his actions in the aftermath of Elizabeth Keen’s death,” according to cartermatt.com. The Blacklist hasn’t had an episode devoted to Ressler in a while, but not all fans are excited about the flashbacks.

Fans aren’t excited about the series returning with an episode focused on Ressler

Whether fans like Ressler as a character or not, many are not excited that a Ressler-centric episode will be the first thing they see when the series comes back from an almost month-long break.

“Might be an unpopular opinion, but not really looking forward to Episode 9.07,” wrote one Reddit user. “I think your opinion is the popular opinion,” agreed another. “I don’t love the idea of an episode of Ressler grieving Liz, especially not after a month of no episodes, but I will try to be optimistic about it. There could be new information we didn’t have before.”

“Yeah…I don’t like the positioning of this episode. An episode coming back from hiatus should be main story arc focused,” said another Reddit user. “I am not a fan of Ressler so it will make it even more irritating to watch.”

It’s not clear yet whether Ressler will be the only main character featured in this episode, or whether Red or other task force members will appear. Though Ressler isn’t everyone’s favorite character, the episode could provide valuable insight into what happened in the two years following Liz’s death.

When does ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 Episode 7 air?

The Blacklist Season 9 has been on hiatus since Dec. 9, 2021. The series will return with a new episode on Jan. 6, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET with the episode “Between Sleep & Awake.” For viewers who aren’t the biggest fans of Ressler, it’s understandable that they may be disappointed by a Ressler-focused episode after such a long break. Still, the episode may reveal some interesting new information.
