‘The Dropout’ Star Amanda Seyfried Has Thoughts About Elizabeth Holmes’ Green Juice Fad, ‘I Saw Through It Immediately’

Amanda Seyfried can be seen sipping on Elizabeth Holmes' green juice during much of 'The Dropout.' However, unlike the Theranos founder, the actor didn't embrace the green juice phenomenon. 'I saw through that fad immediately and rebelled,' she said.

TL;DR:

  • The Dropout’s Amanda Seyfriend drinks Elizabeth Holmes’ green juice in the Hulu original series.
  • Seyfried “rebelled” against the green juice trend but she used to make smoothies on set.
  • The Dropout recreated Elizabeth Holmes’ green juice interview.

Watch The Dropout on Hulu and see Amanda Seyfried sip on green juice, her character Elizabeth Holmes’ drink of choice. Throughout much of the true crime drama, she can be seen with a cup of the green stuff in hand. But, as Seyfried revealed in a recent interview, she didn’t personally embrace the green juice trend.

Sunny Balwani introduces Elizabeth Holmes to green juice in ‘The Dropout’

Seyfried’s character changes her look as Theranos continues to grow on The Dropout. After all, she’s the CEO of a burgeoning company in Silicon Valley. With encouragement from her boyfriend-turned Theranos executive, Sunny Balwani (Naveen Andrews), Holmes changes what she wears and what she eats.

At one point in The Dropout, Balwani hands the Theranos founder a glass of green juice. She takes a sip and calls it “disgusting.” Upset with the assessment, Balwani dumps the liquid all over Holmes.

Later, Holmes has embraced green juice and a new look. She trades tanks tops for turtlenecks and pantsuits. Gone are the days of her dancing to music in the office alone. Now she walks around with a security detail while often sporting disheveled hair and red lipstick.

Amanda Seyfried says she ‘rebelled’ against the green juice ‘fad’

Seyfried might drink Holmes’ green juice on TV but she’s not a fan of the stuff, the actor told Vanity Fair in March 2022. Asked to share her “personal experience” with the “green juice phenomenon,” the Mean Girls alum admitted she didn’t embrace it.

“I saw through it immediately because I was like, ‘That’s a lot of sugar,’” she said.

The 36-year-old continued, saying she’d been skeptical of how nutritious it really was. “It just didn’t make sense to me that you would be getting all the nutrients, and I’ve read a lot of stuff to back that up,” she said.

Smoothies, on the other hand, Seyfried “was doing for years on a daily basis.”

“Even if I was on location, I’d have a Vitamix and I’d make smoothies myself. It was always celery and spinach and turmeric and a little bit of whatever I wanted, but it was never sugary.”

“It’s really hard to find a green juice—which is, by the way, very refreshing and fun every once in a while—that’s not sugary, like more fruit than green,” she added. “So I saw through that fad immediately and rebelled.”

Green juice became almost like an accessory for Holmes. So much so that The Dropout even recreated a moment when she mentioned it on camera.

Asked, “If you are what you eat, what are you?” by an interviewer, Holmes replied, “green juice.” Viewers can see a recreation of Holmes’ green juice interview in an early episode of The Dropout

As for Holmes’ green juice recipe, John Carreyrou, the Wall Street Journal reporter portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach in The Dropout, shared a little bit about it in his 2018 book, Bad Blood. He wrote that her typical recipe included spinach, parsley, wheatgrass, celery, and cucumber.
