‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Are the Actors Team Luke or Team Nick?

In The Handmaid’s Tale, love plays an important role in the life of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss). As the seasons have progressed, June has found herself conflicted about her love for her husband, Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle), and her growing feelings for her lover in Gilead, Nick Blaine (Max Minghella).

When it comes to the love triangle in The Handmaid’s Tale, it seems everyone has an opinion about whether Team Luke or Team Nick is better. During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, cast members of The Handmaid’s Tale were asked if they are Team Luke or Team Nick.

Elisabeth Moss refuses to pick between Team Luke and Team Nick in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

In The Handmaid’s Tale, Moss plays June, the central character. She is also an executive producer and director of the show, meaning if Moss picked one side, she could possibly give away the resolution of the love triangle.

“I mean, look. I do have an idea as a producer of where I think it has to go, but that is no reflection upon either of these gentlemen,” Moss told Rotten Tomatoes.

She continued, “And as their friend, co-worker, and sometimes boss, I’m not at liberty to choose.”

Moss was then asked if the love stories would be the same if June had met Nick in the real world and met Luke in Gilead.

“Yes, I do… because I think Luke may have changed in a way that Nick changed,” Moss shared.

She went on to explain that because Nick and June experience Gilead together, they have a “bond.” Since June has a daughter with both men, Moss thinks it is “impossible” to choose between the two characters.

Like Moss, actors Ann Dowd and Madeline Brewer also seemed torn about the love triangle while speaking to Rotten Tomatoes.

Which actors in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ are Team Luke?

Even though Moss could not bring herself to pick a partner for June, multiple actors in the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale told Rotten Tomatoes they are Team Luke.

“… if you had to put me on the spot, you know, I’m old fashioned and I’ve got a ring on my finger and whoever’s got the other parts of that ring wins so I have to go with the married man here,” said Joseph Fiennes, who plays Commander Fred Waterford on the show.

Fagbenle, who plays Luke in The Handmaid’s Tale, unsurprisingly thinks June should end up picking Luke. The actor also thinks that if the roles were reversed, June and Luke would have fallen in love in Gilead.

In The Handmaid’s Tale, Sam Jaeger plays U.S. representative Mark Tuello. While speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, Jaeger admitted that he hopes June will pick Luke as well.

Some of the cast members are Team Nick

Based on The Handmaid’s Tale cast interview with Rotten Tomatoes, it seems the cast members are pretty evenly split between Team Nick and Team Luke.

Amanda Brugel plays Rita Blue in the show, and she ultimately decided that Nick is the better fit for June in The Handmaid’s Tale.

“There’s been such shift in June over the last four seasons and Nick at least understands Gilead, has been in Gilead, and knows who she is now,” Brugel said.

Minghella, like Fagbenle, supports the character that he portrays and is a fan of June and Nick’s love story. Bradley Whitford plays Commander Joseph Lawrence, and because his character spends a great deal of time with Nick and June in Gilead, he also picked Team Nick.
