‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Elisabeth Moss Reveals Nick Is ‘the Only Thing’ She Cares About in Season 5

In 'The Handmaid's Tale,' there is a complicated love triangle between June Osborne, Nick Blaine, and Luke Bankole. June seemingly picked Nick in the season 4 finale of the series, but the show is renewed for a fifth season, meaning her choice might not be final. In an interview with Elle, Elisabeth Moss, who plays June, shared that Nick is 'the only thing' she cares about for the fifth season.

The fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale just ended, but the Hulu series has already been renewed for a fifth season. Much of season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale focused on the complicated love triangle between June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), and Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle). In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Moss shared that in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5, Nick is “the only thing” she cares about.

Elisabeth Moss wants to know about Nick in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5

The season 4 finale of The Handmaid’s Tale, titled “The Wilderness,” premiered June 16 on Hulu. In the episode, June made the decision to kill her former captor, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), along with other former Handmaids.

Nick and Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) helped the women by making sure Fred was returned to Gilead and handed over to the Eyes, Gilead’s secret police force that Nick is in charge of.

In her interview with Elle, Moss shared all of the things she hopes are explored in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5. She said:

“Hannah, Hannah, Hannah. Always Hannah. I want to know what’s going to happen to Janine and Esther and that little gang that’s formed of the two of them. Jesus Christ, that’s going to be interesting. I want to know if Lawrence is going to prove himself to be a good man. I want to know how Emily is going to find her revenge. And for June, Hannah, Hannah, Hannah. And what is she going to do to try to bring down this regime? Then, of course, Nick. What’s going to happen with Nick? Let’s be honest, that’s pretty much the only thing I care about.”

Nick is the better fit for June right now

In The Handmaid’s Tale, June was married to Luke before getting captured to become a Handmaid in Gilead. While in Gilead, June met Nick, and the two fell in love and had a daughter, Nichole. During the third season, Luke and June’s best friend Moira (Samira Wiley) began raising Nichole. June stayed behind in Gilead to try and rescue her and Luke’s daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake).

When June and Luke reunited in the fourth season after June escaped to Canada, their relationship was tense. In the scenes where June met with Nick, she was more relaxed and acted in love. On top of that, Nick helped June fulfill her wish of murdering Fred while Luke wanted June to move past what happened to her in Gilead.

Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale, particularly “The Wilderness,” made it clear that Nick currently fits June more than Luke does. But of course the fourth season is not the end of the show, meaning things could change down the line.

Elisabeth Moss thinks June ‘wants to be with Nick’ in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

In addition to wanting more Nick in season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale, Moss admitted she thinks June “wants to be with Nick” more than Luke.

“Look, it’s kind of obvious. She wants to be with Nick. She’s in love with Nick,” Moss told Elle. “The person that she is now, for better or worse, is a very different person from the one who married Luke… Luke is not going to deliver Fred to her to tear apart into pieces, and that’s what’s important to her.”

Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale is available to stream on Hulu.
