Nick and June reunite in the penultimate episode of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ season 4

In the latest installment of The Handmaid’s Tale, June tells Luke (O-T Fagbenle) about the last time she met Hannah in Gilead. Realizing how crucial it is to get their daughter out, he suggests June take Nicole to meet Nick and convince him to help.

June asks US agent  Mark Tuello to set up a meeting with Nick. And soon after, she drives out to meet him, accompanied by secret service agents. Nick is waiting for her at an abandoned girls’ school, where the two embrace and kiss, and dote over Nicole.

Just as June begins to ask him about Hannah, he pulls out a file that contains information and photographs revealing Hannah’s location and status. But at the same time, Nick notes that there are too many Eyes where Hannah is, and suggests it would be impossible to get her out.

June is thankful. And after their brief meeting, she drives back home to Luke.

Some fans of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ wonder why the meeting was so easy to pull off

After seeing how unattainable the idea of getting to Canada has been for the people of Gilead, some The Handmaid’s Tale fans are wondering why it was so easy for Nick to come meet June. And many are also confused as to how June pulled off her phone call to Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) so easily.

“I know most of our main characters are in Canada now, so the writers need to bridge the gap a bit so our Gilead characters and Canadian characters can communicate, but it was never established before that it was this…easy?” one Reddit user wrote.

“June can just call Lawrence’s house? Naomi and Warren can just stroll in and I guess Gilead made them promise not to escape? Nick can visit? I love the episode but this was a little ridiculous to me.”

It’s probably because Nick is a Commander now

Through the last two seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, we’ve seen Nick rise up in the ranks of Gilead. This season, he’s a full fledged Commander with inside connections to the military. And that may have been what helped him get out of Gilead and into Canada so easily.

Tuello set up the meeting, but there’s no explanation as to why Gilead would allow for it to take place. In their mind, June is a fugitive who let dozens of kids and Marthas escape. And she has no diplomatic value, at least in their mind.

So, it’s not likely that Nick’s visit was sanctioned by Gilead. He probably doesn’t have many Eyes on him, due to his military status. And likely made this covert visit, without announcing to the higher ups.

Hopefully, the season 4 finale will highlight a little more of Nick’s life in Gilead, and perhaps explain exactly what he’s up to.
