The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of June Osborne, a handmaid in The Republic of Gilead. So far, the hit Hulu series has captured fans for three seasons, and The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 is in the works. Now, fans want to know where filming’s at — and it looks like the cast and crew have been spotted in a few well-known locations associated with the book and the show. Here’s what’s reported.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 is upon us, and we can’t wait for the same beautiful cinematography and incredible acting we’ve seen from the previous three seasons.

So, where was the show filmed initially? According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Handmaid’s Tale was primarily filmed in Toronto, Canada, though much of it is set in the U.S. The crew filmed in downtown Toronto to recreate a Massachusetts town, and the home of the Waterfords was filmed in Ontario.

The TV show creators wanted to use modern and identifiable public spaces to make the series feel even more relevant and real, the publication notes. Toronto’s City Hall is included in a few scenes, as are the identifiable downtown streets and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. building.

It was also important for the set designers to make sure their locations fit in with their color scheme. The stark red and green of the handmaids’ and commander’s wives’ costumes are perfectly set against the typical blue-gray world around them.

The crew for season 4 was recently spotted filming in a few distinct locations

It looks like the crew is back to filming in typical locations for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4. According to Toronto’s local news source blogTO, the crew’s been filming in Toronto and surrounding areas of Canada since September 2020.

It looks like fans might see a lot more action on the border of Canada and Gilead, too. The news source notes there was a “Border Crossing” sign at a metal bridge in Conestoga, Ontario. And the production crew was also back at Fort York National Historic Site in Toronto. Fort York is where the film crew previously shot scenes at the detention center.

Those who’ve watched the series know Fred Waterford was detained at the Toronto detention center. His wife, Serena, was also detained prior to her arrest.

Aside from the detention center, blogTo notes those who observed the cast and crew saw characters from the show carrying a baby across the border. We’re not sure if that means the baby was being carried from Canada to Gilead, or from Gilead to Canada just yet.

Hulu did not return a request for comment about the filming locations by the time of publication.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 will return to Hulu on April 28, 2021. And it looks like there’s a lot to look forward to given the new trailer. June seemingly makes it back to the U.S. and takes part in the resistance once she’s able. It also seems other handmaids are able to escape Gilead.

Elisabeth Moss, the actor who plays June, is directing this season, too. “I will say that the first half of this season is definitely bigger than we’ve ever done,” she told Deadline. “It has been incredibly challenging. It has been, on a production level, really, really outside of our box, and it’s just bigger in every way.”

In addition to Hulu, it seems the show will be available for purchase on YouTube, Google Play, Apple iTunes, Apple TV, and Vudu. We’re excited to see what’s in store during season 4.
