Before Gilead, Janine worked as a waitress and had a son named Caleb. When Gilead was created, Caleb was taken from Janine and she was forced to become a Handmaid.

Flashbacks show that Janine was quite rebellious when she was first captured. After talking back to the Aunts, Janine’s right eye is removed as a punishment.

After this, Janine is much more reserved as a coping mechanism, but she still suffers from frequent mental breakdowns due to the trauma she has been forced to endure.

In The Handmaid’s Tale, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) are very protective of Janine because of her mental state. June oftentimes treats Janine like a younger sister, and even if she finds Janine frustrating at times she loves her.

Janine will appear in the fourth season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

At the end of the third season, June orchestrates the escape of dozens of children from Gilead. While helping others escape, June is shot by a Guardian and found bleeding by Alma (Nina Kiri), Janine, and other Handmaids.

On March 30, Hulu released a trailer for the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale. Janine is seen at multiple points during the trailer, and it appears that she travels with June to Chicago, a battleground in Gilead.

After the Daily Express published an unconfirmed rumor that Janine dies in season 4 while in Chicago, The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner denied the report.

“Wow, are you wrong,” Miller replied to the Daily Express on Twitter.

In another tweet, Miller wrote, “Nice inaccurate headline, @Daily_Express. For the rest of you, here is some speculation about The Handmaid’s Tale stated as fact. Spoiler alert: they are so so wrong.”

What to expect from Janine in season 4

With Miller confirming that Janine does not die in Chicago, fans can look forward to the fourth season without fear. To get fans excited for the upcoming season, Hulu began releasing teaser trailers for all of the individual characters.

The character trailers are a mix of flashbacks and new scenes from season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale while each character narrates what to expect from them.

On April 14, Hulu released a trailer for Janine. The new teaser shows Janine traveling to Chicago with June and taking part in the rebellion along with flashbacks showing Janine’s history.

“I used to be kind of pretty before they turned me into a freak, so everyone can see what happens when you’re bad,” Janine says in a voiceover. “From then on I tried so hard to be good, but then I realized that breaking the rules was the only way forward.”

Based on this, it seems Janine will reclaim her rebellious personality from the time before Gilead in the fourth season. Season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale will premiere on Hulu on April 28.
