The ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’ Crossover Episode Is Finally Here. This Is What Fans Can Expect.
So, what can we expect when McGarrett and Danno encounter Magnum and Higgins? Prepare yourself for an intense two hours of television.
National security is at stake when someone steals a list of undercover CIA agents
Things kick off with an episode of Hawaii Five-0. Someone has stolen a list of undercover CIA agents. With the names of the agents at risk of being exposed — jeopardizing national security in the process — Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) turns to Magnum (Jay Hernandez), Higgins (Perdita Weeks), Rick (Zachary Knighton), and TC (Stephen Hill) to recover the list.
A Five-0 member is kidnapped, and the CIA gets involved
In the crossover’s second hour, the stakes get higher for the Five-0 crew when Junior (Beulah Koale) is kidnapped by those who want to use him as leverage to recover the list of agents. The CIA doesn’t want the rest of Five-0 to interfere, so they round up the other officers. Tani (Meaghan Rath) and Quinn (Katrina Law) turn to Magnum and Higgins for help.
Turning crossover dreams into reality
The idea of a crossover between the two Hawaii-set CBS shows has been brewing since Magnum P.I.’s first season in 2018. The show’s producers were especially looking forward to a meeting between Magnum and McGarrett.
“The plan is to ultimately introduce those two characters, have them in a crossover episode, and at least have them know of each other,” showrunner Peter M. Lenkov explained during a panel at Comic-Con in 2018. “That’s the fun of the fact they are both ex-Navy Seals.”
It took a while for all the pieces for the crossover to fall into place, Lenkov told TVLine. But the final result should be worth the wait for fans.
“It’s a big-stakes story that really feels like a two-hour movie,” he said.
A future romance?
Could the crossover even give birth to a new relationship? Apparently, there’s some tension between Quinn and Rick. And Lenkov told TVLine that the actors said they’d be up for a romance.
“They have a bit of chemistry,” he said. “After filming, they both said, ‘Hey, is this going to go anywhere…?’ Because it was a lot of fun.”
While this is the first official crossover between Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I., a few characters from the former, including Duke (Dennis Chun) and Noelani (Kimee Balmilero), have made appearances on Magnum. Five-0 and MacGyver (which also airs on CBS on Friday nights) crossed over in 2017.
Hawaii Five-0 airs Friday, Jan. 3 at 8/7c on CBS, followed by Magnum P.I. at 9/8c.
