The Matrix: Resurrections was a film that was in the making for well over a decade. In 2019, after years of speculation, the film was finally announced. But coronavirus (COVID-19) derailed the production for months. In the summer of 2020, showrunners were able to resume filming, but it wouldn’t be until close to a year later that fans would learn anything substantial about the science-fiction epic.

What is known for sure is that Keanu Reeves will be reprising his classic role as Neo/Thomas Anderson. Reeves, who became a major star after the release of 1999’s The Matrix, will be joined by other returning franchise favorites like Carrie-Ann Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith. New cast members will also be featured in the film, including Neil Patrick Harris and Christina Ricci, as reported by Collider. With a release date set for December 22 on HBO Max, fans will soon be able to enjoy a movie that has been wrapped in mystery.

What did the exclusive trailer for ‘The Matrix: Resurrections’ reveal?

Den of Geek offered up a breakdown of the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections, doing a deep dive into details of the plot. In the trailer, fans get the idea that Thomas Anderson has forgotten all about the Matrix, and is being offered mysterious blue pills when at therapy, which seem to be working to suppress his memories of the Matrix. However, the trailer features a moment when Thomas encounters Abdul-Mateen’s character, a seeming carbon copy of Morpheus, and he offers Thomas a red pill—at which point, the door opens for Thomas to become Neo.

In light of the new footage, fans have started to develop theories about what really happens in The Matrix: Resurrections. Den of Geek pointed out that it is very possible that the film will serve as a “passing of the torch” story, with Thomas Anderson/Neo helping to forge a new generation of heroes, along with Trinity.

Another fan theory is that the Thomas Anderson in the trailer isn’t really human at all, but possibly a snippet of code that is slowly becoming self-aware and must be corrected. With some featured cast members missing from the released footage, much is still speculation.

Early reactions from fans have all been overwhelmingly positive, with CinemaBlend sharing a few top fan reactions: “I just saw the trailer for The Matrix: Resurrections at CinemaCon and it looks so badass. I was so worried that it wasn’t going to WOW me but I was totally wrong,” one fan shared on Twitter. For many, the debut of the film can’t come soon enough, since it seems unlikely that any more footage from the top-secret film project will be released until the release date.
