Dunder Mifflin is a strange workplace. That’s mostly because Michael Scott (Steve Carell) made terrible choices as a boss on The Office. But fans thought there was more going on that we didn’t see. Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey react to popular fan theory.

There is a money laundering theory for ‘The Office’

Fans of The Office have been suspicious of the characters for some time. There is one fan who made a Reddit thread giving the reasons why.

One of the many odd things about Dunder Mifflin Scranton is that there are three accountants doing a job that could easily be done by one. Though other wasteful business practices are called out by upper management, such as parties and having two managers, this is never touched upon. I think that’s because a small part of Dunder Mifflin is involved in some kind of criminal business, and Angela (Angela Kinsey), Oscar (Oscar Nuñez), and Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) are all involved.

There is one episode that also makes it seem like at least one character could be committing a crime.

Martin reveals why he went to prison

“The Convict” starts with Jan (Melora Hardin) and Michael realizing someone from the Stamford office was previously in prison. They figure out who it is and Michael is set to prove Dunder Mifflin is nothing like prison after the employees make a joke.

There is a scene where Martin (Wayne Wilderson) tells the other employees why he went to prison. He said he was found guilty of insider trading.

Kevin says in a talking head, “I asked Martin to explain why he went to jail three times because it sounds a lot like what I do every day here at the office.” It’s a funny scene but there are many fans who took this seriously.

Fischer and Kinsey talked about this episode on Office Ladies. The fan theory about Dunder Mifflin was mentioned.

“There is a whole theory online that Dunder Mifflin is a front, like a money laundering front,” Kinsey told Fischer. She later said, “And that maybe like Kevin and I and the accountants are in on it.”

A fan wrote in to talk about this theory. Fans aren’t trusting of the main character’s branch because Scranton outperforms the other branches even though paper companies are struggling.

“I would say no,” Fischer said. “I don’t think it really is a front for money laundering. I mean if that was a part of the story I believe Greg Daniels would have revealed that to us in the finale or somewhere in the last season.”

She did say Kevin sounds like he’s involved in something shady by this line. “I’m gonna say I could see it,” Kinsey said. The actor later said having a lot of inventory and a boss who wouldn’t catch certain details makes it possible.

The podcast hosts seem to be split on this theory. However, the chances of all the accountants being in on it is unlikely. Angela is very much a rule follower.
