The Office stars Angela Kinsey and Rainn Wilson had a number of kissing scenes during the series run as Angela and Dwight, but Kinsey revealed it wasn’t always a pleasant experience. During an episode of the Office Ladies podcast, Kinsey said it was sometimes awkward and “disgusting.”

‘The Office’ kissing scenes were ‘always awkward’

During the Dec. 6 episode of the Office Ladies podcast, Kinsey and co-host Jenna Fischer decided to answer some fan questions before they discussed the “Dunder Mifflin Infinity” episode.

One fan wanted some behind-the-scenes scoop on kissing scenes on the show and Kinsey and Fischer dished on their experiences.

Kinsey read the fan’s question: “I have a question about kissing the other actors. How do you prep for kissing someone that you were friends with but not romantically involved with? Was it ever awkward?”

Kinsey admitted, “It’s always awkward,” but explained how the friendships on the show did help alleviate some of what could be a very uncomfortable moment. “Thank goodness over the years, though, you do become such good friends that it’s just like, OK, well, we’ll just do this really quickly.”

Why Angela Kinsey said kissing Rainn Wilson was sometimes ‘disgusting’

Kinsey also shared that her co-star often made the kissing experience a little less appealing at times.

“But something that made it difficult for me, which maybe you wouldn’t think about, is that I often had to kiss Rainn Wilson and for whatever reason, he was usually eating something disgusting right beforehand,” Kinsey explained. “And I’d be like, ‘Rainn, dang it. Do you have to eat a tuna fish sandwich right before we’re supposed to kiss? Come on!’”

Fischer confirmed Kinsey’s take on Wilson. “Yeah, I remember he would always be like downing a cup of coffee and an everything bagel,” she noted. “And he’d be like, ‘I’m ready for my kissing scene’ and you would be like, ‘Rainn! A mint. Can you do something?’”

Fischer’s experience was a bit different because she had a more aware scene partner. “Well, at least for me, John [Krasinski] was always very conscientious,” she explained. “He would have a mint or some gum.”

“We were very breath aware,” Fischer shared.

Kinsey was jealous of that awareness, adding, “Rainn… Rainn not so much.”

She also confirmed that the kissing scenes were not quite the grand make out sessions you see in the movies. “We didn’t do the big open mouth stuff that maybe you see in movies and whatnot,” Kinsey explained. “This was like television, comedy kissing is very different than like a dramatic movie make out. You know, it’s your lips are kind of just together. You kind of fake it.”

‘The Office’ used this trick for Dwight and Angela scenes

During the Oct. 7 episode of Office Ladies, Kinsey and Fischer chatted about the episode where Jim sees Dwight and Angela kissing. Fischer noticed that when Dwight goes to the accountant’s workspace, he sits on her desk.

This move was very purposeful due to their height difference. “Almost every scene Dwight and Angela have together, he is seated,” Kinsey said.

During another podcast episode, Kinsey said the show used other techniques as well, such as having Kinsey wear high heels or stand on an apple box. “I was standing on a box all the time,” she revealed.
