Netflix’s widely appreciated movie The Old Guard is getting a sequel. The movie came out last year to much critical and popular appreciation during the pandemic. With Charlize Theron as a producer and lead in the cast, the movie was hailed for its unique portrayal of superheroes in film. Based on comics of the same name, the movie is now getting a sequel.

What is ‘The Old Guard’ about?

The Old Guard talks about centuries-old, immortal mercenaries who have helped humanity through the ages and in different parts of the world. Trying to conceal their immortality, the group has a rule of never taking assignments from the same people. Once they break their rule to help a group of kidnapped girls, their identity is threatened to be revealed by a CIA agent James Copley, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Along with this, the discovery that there is another one of them — an immortal — whose regenerative abilities have taken the American military by surprise, once again, threatens their hidden identities. The four members of the group, Andy, played by Theron, Booker, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, Nicky, played by Luca Marinelli, and Joe played by Marwan Kenzari, then set out for their dual mission. They seek to bring their new member, Nile, played by Kiki Layne, to safety and stop Copley from revealing their true identities to others.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the movie was recognized for its stunt and action sequences along with Theron’s performance. The talks of a sequel began almost as soon as the movie first debuted on Netflix and a sequel was reportedly given way earlier this year. But an official announcement recently came in, Deadline reported.

What do we know about the sequel?

First things first, the cast of the first movie, including Theron, is said to reprise their roles in the sequel. Theron will once again be on board as a producer as well. In an article in Variety, Theron was quoted as saying the script of the movie was done and that the movie would begin shooting in 2022.

One change, however, that the recent Netflix and Skydance announcement noted in the sequel was directorial. Prince-Bythewood, who received many praises for her direction and nuanced eye for the superhero genre, is not directing the sequel. Though she stays on board as a producer on the movie.

“I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre,” Prince-Bythewood said.

The producers though are not worried about it as they have brought in Victoria Mahoney, the second unit director to J.J.Abrams in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, to direct the movie.

“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill, and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard,” Mahoney said. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure  of my excitement —  being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses.”

Both Prince-Bythewood and Theron are also excited to have Mahoney direct the film. “We are beyond thrilled that Vic[Mahoney] is joining The Old Guard team,” Theron and other producers on the movie said. “Her passion for these characters and her ambitious vision for the movie overwhelmed us all. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with her.”

What is the sequel based on?

The sequel, like the first movie, will be based on the graphic novel of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. Rucka had already released a sequel to his graphic novel in 2019, which was called The Old Guard: Multiplied

Although more details about the story of the sequel have not been released, Rucka has, reportedly, written the movie with David Ellison and Dana Goldberg.

And if Theron is to be believed, the movie will go into production in 2022 and should be expected to release some time after.
