A timeline of Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez’s relationship

Lopez met the former MLB star at a baseball game in 2005, per People. Both of them were married to other people at the time — Lopez to Marc Anthony and Rodriguez to Cynthia Scurtis — but Lopez has confessed there was a bit of a spark there.

“We shook hands, and it was this weird electricity for, like, three seconds,” she told Sports Illustrated in 2019. “Three to five seconds of looking at somebody right in their eyes, and getting stuck.”

Still, they kept it friendly. Then, when they were both single, they bumped into each other in a chance encounter in 2017 and began dating. By 2019, they were engaged and moving forward with their wedding planning.

The couple initially planned to wed in an Italian ceremony in 2020, but those plans were interrupted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite efforts to get the wedding back on track, multiple outlets reported on March 11 that Lopez and Rodriguez had decided to call it off.

Why Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez ended their engagement

So far, neither of them has directly commented on the reason behind their reported split. However, an insider told Entertainment Tonight that Lopez allegedly realized that Rodriguez “wasn’t right” for her as a longtime partner.

“The couple has called off their engagement and have decided their relationship has run its course,” the source began.

The insider continued saying that “Jennifer felt like moving forward to marriage wasn’t right. Recently Alex’s character has been called into question and that didn’t sit right with Jennifer. The couple will always have respect for each other.”

The couple’s breakup comes on the heels of drama

Their split comes weeks after a scandal involving Rodriguez and Southern Charm star Madison LeCroy.

To recap, during a Southern Charm reunion, TV personality Craig Conover accused LeCroy of having an affair with a former MLB star, who fans later guessed was Rodriguez. LeCroy refuted those rumors to Page Six, explaining that while she has talked to Rodriguez on the phone, she “never met up” with him.

Rodriguez’s representative also denied the rumored affair, saying the former athlete didn’t even know LeCroy. Lopez was said to be unbothered by the rumors. However, newer reports say Rodriguez’s alleged behavior ultimately did impact their relationship.

Though some sources have denied that it was LeCroy alone who caused the split, an insider told E! Online that Rodriguez allegedly still has a bad habit of communicating with other women.

“Alex has had problem texting girls for years,” said the source. “There is no proof that he has moved past the texting flirtation stage, but the evidence had continued piling up and became too much too ignore.”

It sucks that Lopez won’t have the happy ending she imagined with Rodriguez, but we’re sure she’ll bounce back eventually. Here’s wishing both her and Rodriguez lots of peace and healing moving forward.
