Taylor Swift recently opened up about her mended relationship with Katy Perry and shared what it was that really helped them get back on “good terms.”

Taylor and Katy’s feud started over a backup dancer

There are always new celebrity feuds popping up in the entertainment industry every now and again, but no feud will ever be as interesting as the one between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.

The two pop singers started out as great friends who many thought would remain that way.

It wasn’t until December 2013 when their friendship began turning sour.

During an interview with Australia’s The Examiner, backup dancer Lockhart Brownlie revealed that he and two other dancers left Swift’s Red tour to join Perry for her Prism tour.

According to Brownlie, he had a closer relationship with Katy Perry and since he wasn’t dancing much during Taylor Swift’s tour, he decided to go back to the “Teenage Dream” singer.

“Obviously we were with Katy for two and a half years, she’s like family to us,” he said. “So we were, like, ‘Absolutely’. We weren’t really dancing in Taylor’s tour anyway, so I had got a little bored and I really wanted to do a promo tour.”

The following year, Taylor Swift revealed that her award-winning hit, “Bad Blood” was about a female musical artist who she wouldn’t name, who “tried to sabotage” her tour by hiring people on her staff.

Swift also shared that aside from Katy “sabotaging her tour,” she wasn’t sure if the “Hot N Cold” singer was ever her friend.

“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Swift said during an interview with  Rolling Stone. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'”

“She did something so horrible,” she continued. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.”

Fans could easily tell the singer was talking about Perry and knew that a feud was officially underway.

Taylor and Katy reconnected at a party

After keeping their distance from each other for a few years, it wasn’t until a simple note officially put an end to Taylor Swift and Katy Perry’s feud.

In May 2018, Swift shared a video of an olive branch and a personal note from Perry. The note was addressed “Hey Old Friend,” and at first glance, it looked to be a formal apology to Swift.

“Hey old friend, I’ve been doing some reflecting on past miscommunications and the feelings between us, I really want to clear the air,” the note reads. “I’m deeply sorry for… ” the note continues, before it’s covered by the envelope.

Though the note was able to put an end to the feud, it wasn’t until Swift and Perry sat down, face to face, and talked out their differences.

During a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Taylor Swift revealed that though she and Perry have been on good terms since she received the note, them spending time together at a party was when they truly reconnected.

“When we saw each other, it was just very clear to both of us that everything was different, that we had grown up, and that we had grown past allowing ourselves to be pitted against each other, and it just was very, very clear that we remembered how much we had in common,” she explained. “So, both of us have been in a really good place for a while, but I don’t think either of us really knew if we were ever going to talk about it publicly.”

Taylor’s new music video shows helped them rebuild their bond

After making amends during the party, Taylor Swift took it one step further and asked her former enemy if she would be part of her new “You Need to Calm Down” video.

Aside from taking part in the video to show that she and Swift are back on good terms, it was also a way for these two celebrities to come together and show their support for a community they both have a deep respect for.

“Katy agreed to do the music video because both she and Taylor are on the same page in regard to LGBTQ rights,” a source revealed to Entertainment Tonight. “They have both been big activists and feel very passionately about the cause. The video features RuPaul‘s Drag Race queens and many LGBTQ icons. That is why Katy agreed to do the video and put their issues behind them because she felt it was for a good cause that she cares about.”
