There’s a new group of superheroes in town

In the final moments of season 2, it’s revealed that the Hargreeves siblings traveled back to a 2019 they were unfamiliar with. In their new reality, Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) ran the Sparrow Academy — not the Umbrella Academy.

After losing Ben’s (Justin H. Min) ghost in one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the season, many fans were as shocked as the Hargreeves were to find his portrait hanging above the fireplace where Fives’ once lived.

What was more shocking was that Sir Reginald and Ben appear to be alive in this new dimension. It’s unclear who else is part of the Sparrow Academy crew, but fans took note of a mysterious green cube floating next to the shadowed figures standing above Ben.

Steve Blackman has big plans for the Sparrow Academy in Season 3

As any good showrunner is wont to do, Blackman has already started to think about The Umbrella Academy Season 3 — “if we get one,” he said to SyFy Wire.

“I also wanted to give [viewers] an amazing cliffhanger, which is that it’s not their house anymore.” In “The End of Something,” fans discovered the Umbrella Academy ceased to exist. In its place was the Sparrow Academy.

“There’s a lot of detail in that scene,” Blackman continued. “We changed the emblems on the wall. I mean, everything is Sparrow now in that house. That was really important to us.”

At this time, there’s little information on the Sparrow Academy. All we know is that Ben and five other people are part of the group, with the addition of a mysterious green cube.

Steve Blackman addressed the Sparrow Academy’s green cube

After seeing the last episode of season 2, fans started to theorize what the green cube could mean for the Hargreeves siblings.

During an Ask-Me-Anything forum on Reddit, Blackman answered a few fan questions related to the season 2 finale. When one fan asked, “What’s up with the unidentified green cube?” Blackman’s response was simple.

“His name is Christopher,” he wrote. Blackman said nothing more on the subject. But fans had plenty of their own thoughts.

Fans are starting to theorize what — or who — the green cube could be

One fan on Reddit had a few theories that could explain the purpose of the green cube. One theory is that it could be “the replacement for Grace [or] Pogo.”

In season 1, both Grace and Pogo are killed when Vanya (Ellen Page) realizes the potential of her powers.

After seeing how the Umbrella Academy kids turned out, this fan believes Sir Reginald came up with a newer, better authority figure for the Sparrow Academy.

“After meeting Five, Reginald was bound to pull out more advanced technology in order to prepare for the special children,” the fan explained. “Reginald clearly didn’t like how the Umbrella Academy turned out and having a strict A.I. cube thing be an authority figure in the new kids’ lives seems like a Reginald solution to what he perceived as a failed timeline counterpart.”

This fan also believes the green cube could be “an interesting parallel to Five.” Going off of the theory that Sir Reginald was displeased with the Umbrella Academy, he could have used advanced technology to make “better children” or in this case, a “better” Five.

The cube could be “advanced technology [capable of predicting] Five’s space/time jumps in combat,” the fan wrote. “[That] would make for an interesting obstacle to overcome — if the Sparrow Academy turns out to be enemies [in season 3].”

Fans will have to wait quite a while to find out the true meaning of the green cube.
