Fans should expect a few exciting new surprises in the upcoming installment of The Umbrella Academy. The first seasons pulled storylines directly from the graphic novels. But according to series star Emmy Raver-Lampman, The Umbrella Academy Season 3 will differ from the source material.

The Netflix series is based on Gerard Way’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ comics

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is an adaptation of the comic book series created by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá. Dark Horse Comics published their first graphic novels in 2007.

It became a limited series with three volumes — Apocalypse Suite, Dallas, and Hotel Oblivion. Way and Bá released four additional short stories — Mon Dieu, But the Past Ain’t Through With You, Safe & Sound, and Anywhere But Here.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 will differ from the comics teases Emmy Raver-Lampman

The Umbrella Academy Season 1 followed Way’s comics very closely. But for the third season, showrunner Steve Blackman is taking liberties with the storyline. And Raver-Lampman, who plays Allison Hargreeves on the Netflix series, noted he’s making the changes with Way’s input.

“We’re running adjacent to the graphic novels,” the actor told Collider. “But I don’t think Steve is beholden at all to the graphic novels, by needing it to be something that’s verbatim, needing it to reflect exactly what’s happening in the graphic novels and what’s happening on screen.”

“But I do know that Gerard and Steve are in constant communication,” Raver-Lampman continued. “So, I don’t doubt that they both know what the other has ideas in what the other is thinking. I think there will always be a connection there.”

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 won’t follow Way’s comics to a tee. But Raver-Lampman suggested the changes allow the show to explore exciting new storylines.

“The further we get into The Umbrella Academy, the TV show, I think it’s finding its own way,” the actor noted. “It’s finding its own route, which is exciting. This third season, we’re really, really doing our own thing, and I think the show has found some really cool plots to follow and explore.”

Emmy Raver-Lampman hopes to see ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 release this summer

It’s been a while since fans have seen the Hargreeves. The Umbrella Academy Season 2 premiered in July 2020, a little over a year after the debut season first hit Netflix.

But due to pandemic-related issues, the third installment is facing some delays. While Netflix has yet to announce an official The Umbrella Academy Season 3 release date, Raver-Lampman is hopeful it’ll be out by the summer of 2022.

“I hope this summer because I want to see this season so badly,” Raver-Lampman said in her chat with Collider. “We’ve started doing ADR, and it’s a massive season. There’s just a lot of work in post [production] that has to be done.”

The good news is that summer’s not too far off. In the meantime, fans can revisit the first two seasons on Netflix while checking out The Umbrella Academy Twitter page for exciting series updates and teases.
