Cast members recently confirmed that The Umbrella Academy Season 3 has finally finished filming. The show was met with filming delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Now, fans of the series can rejoice. Filming is complete. This means we’re not too far off from getting to see what our favorite dysfunctional superheroes are up to these days.

The show is based on the graphic novels by Gerard Way (yes, that Gerard Way) and Gabriel Ba. So far, the show has loosely followed the storylines in the comics, but that looks to change in season 3.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 won’t follow the events of ‘Hotel Oblivion’

The Hargreeves are met with a wildly different world when they arrive back at what they think is their home at the end of season 2. They’ve just saved the world from yet another apocalypse, and they get home to a timeline where they don’t even exist.

The Sparrow Academy is lead by an angry version of the Hargreeves siblings’ brother, Ben. Reginald, their adoptive father, doesn’t even recognize them. In their place is a group of people that seem to be the bizarro versions of themselves — except for maybe the mysterious floating cube viewers see hovering over the balcony. We’re not exactly sure what that’s all about yet.

Seasons 1 and 2 followed the general idea of storylines from the first two graphic novels. That can’t happen in The Umbrella Academy Season 3, though. The Sparrow Academy isn’t introduced until the very end of Hotel Oblivion.

Who is in The Sparrow Academy?

In January 2021, Netflix released who is taking on the roles of the members of The Sparrow Academy. Fans also got descriptions of each Sparrow. Yes, even that mysterious floating cube we saw hovering in the season 2 finale has a name.

Christopher, the name of the cube, is “a telekinetic cube of unknown origin. He can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralyzing fear. He acts as the Sparrows’ consulted oracle who hands out incredible advice and serves as the family mediator. Trustworthy, loyal, and treated by the Sparrows like any other sibling, Christopher is a force to be reckoned with.”

How he became a cube remains to be seen. Hopefully, we get an answer in the upcoming season.

Another ‘The Umbrella Academy’ graphic novel is in the works

Way announced that the fourth graphic novel in the series will be The Umbrella Academy: Sparrow Academy. This will focus on the rival group the Hargreeves’ siblings run into at the end of Hotel Oblivion. The book also delves into the other children born the same day as the Hargreeves siblings.

The characters that make up The Umbrella Academy are not related by blood. Instead, they were all born on the same day to mothers who weren’t pregnant when the day began. Reginald Hargreeves set out on a mission to adopt all 43 of the children. However, he only succeeded in adopting the seven which make up those we see in The Umbrella Academy.

With word just coming that filming recently finished at the very beginning of September, it’s pretty safe to assume we’ll get season 3 at some point in 2022. Thanks to showrunner Steve Blackman, we already know all the episode titles of the upcoming season, but no firm date has been set for release yet.

Currently, The Umbrella Academy Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Netflix for those needing a fix.
