‘The Umbrella Academy’ follows the events of the comics it’s based on

The Umbrella Academy is based on My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá’s award-winning Dark Horse comic books of the same name. The first season of the Netflix series follows the events of their first volume, Apocalypse Suite. And the second season is based on the story of Vol. 2, Dallas.

In the Season 2 finale, viewers caught a glimpse of Ben along with a shadow of Hargreeves siblings lined up behind him. Reginald does not recognize The Umbrella Academy, and when they ask him about it, he corrects them and calls it the Sparrow Academy.

The show hasn’t been renewed for Season 3. But if Netflix gives it a greenlight, the third season will most likely be based on the next volume of Way and Bá’s comic book series, Sparrow Academy, which is still in the works.

‘Sparrow Academy’ will feature a big reveal

Gerard Way is still working on Sparrow Academy, which has yet to get an official release date from Dark Horse Comics. But when talking to Forbes, the writer revealed that it will include a huge revelation.

“[It] deals with a very big reveal in the Umbrella Academy universe, something that had been secret for a long time, and our siblings learn a lot about what was happening behind the scenes, as well as discovering the true nature of some characters that have been with them since the beginning,” Way told the outlet. “The series finally starts to answer the question: ‘What about the other babies born on that day, in that moment?’ The Umbrella Academy siblings are not alone in the world anymore.”

‘The Umbrella Academy’ star Justin H. Min talks about the Sparrow Academy in Season 3

If Season 3 happens — which is a real possibility due to the show’s popularity — it will likely pick up in the alternate timeline seen in the Season 2 finale. The biggest question on fans’ minds now is the identity of the Sparrow Academy members. And according to series’ star, Justin H. Min, they may be a mirror to the Umbrella Academy.

“It just set up for an amazing potential Season 3 because it will really be the first time where the Umbrella Academy is facing themselves, almost, or a version of themselves,” the actor told Collider in an interview. “The last two seasons, the antagonists have been these assassin type people, and no one really with supernatural abilities, except Lila. But now, they’re facing an exact replica of themselves, in the Sparrow Academy, so it sets itself up for something really exciting.”

Netflix has yet to confirm plans for Season 3. But fans will likely hear an announcement in the coming months.
