Michael Trevino recalled his favorite storyline from ‘The Vampire Diaries’

In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Trevino dished that his favorite The Vampire Diaries storyline was when Tyler became a hybrid.

“It’s a love-hate type of thing because I enjoyed being the first successful hybrid, just because I was more powerful, and I was able to have a little bit of vampire ability,” Trevino told the publication.

There was one downside to the cool character arc

On the show, Klaus Mikaelson, one of the five original vampires, also had werewolf lineage. For most of his life, his werewolf trait had been dormant, but in a magical ritual, he activated his gene to become a lone hybrid.

Next, Klaus hatched a plan to create a hybrid army designed to do his bidding. He transformed Tyler, who was a werewolf, into his first vamp-wolf hybrid underling. Increased strength and speed combined with his natural ability to kill vampires with his wolf bite made Tyler a force with which to be reckoned.

But the new superpowers came with a steep price. Trevino explained, “But with that, the downside was being sired to Klaus, obviously. That was never fun.”

Trevino confessed that he enjoyed playing such a powerful character

Despite the fact that Tyler’s sire bond with Klaus ultimately stripped him of his free will, Trevino confessed that he relished playing such a powerful character.

He told EW, “I did enjoy being the big bad, ‘Okay, he’s a hybrid now.’ And the fact that even as a werewolf, your bite can kill a vampire — whenever they reminded Stefan and Damon of that, I enjoyed those scenes. Where it was like, ‘Hey listen, if he bites you, you’re dead.’”

Joseph Morgan brought swagger and style to the role of Klaus on The Vampire Diaries. He was positioned as a villain, and Morgan delivered performances that were extremely fun to watch. What’s more, the on-screen chemistry was explosive between Morgan and the rest of the cast, including Trevino.

Trevino told EW this about working with Morgan: “You had Tyler who was just this cocky guy, and then he became a werewolf, and then he became a hybrid, and I think the hybrid was the peak of it. And then also, fighting with Klaus. I enjoyed working with Joseph Morgan because he’s a great actor, and so it was fun to work opposite him for almost a full season.”

Fans can catch Trevino in The Vampire Diaries and Roswell, New Mexico streaming on Netflix.
