The Voice is one of the biggest shows in the world. One reason for this is the numerous talented contestants on the show. Another reason is the larger-than-life personalities of the celebrity judges. Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson are two of the current judges on the show.

They have a lot in common. Shelton is a country singer who occasionally dabbles in pop, while Clarkson is a pop singer who occasionally dabbles in country music. That doesn’t mean they don’t butt heads on the show. Shelton recently made a comment about Clarkson which got her fans upset.

Things get tense on ‘The Voice’

Country Living Magazine reports Shelton, Clarkson, John Legend, and Nick Jonas listened to a 19-year-old singer named Samantha Howell audition for the show. Jonas and Clarkson each wanted Howell to join their team. Legend didn’t comment on what she should do, while Shelton recommended Howell join Jonas’ team.

Shelton explained his reasoning. “I believe one of the biggest groups in the world right now would be a group called the Jonas Brothers. I’m sure that giant fan base—I’m sure each one of them owns a cell phone that they can vote from.”

Many fans felt Shelton was rude. Some thought he was implying the Jonas Brothers have more fans than Clarkson. A shocked Clarkson responded to Shelton, “Are you saying my fans don’t have phones?”

Is Blake Shelton saying the Jonas Brother are more popular than Kelly Clarkson?

Shelton made the meaning of his words much more clear to Clarkson. “I’m sure they do, there’s just about a tenth of them compared to the Jonas Brothers.” Jonas had a mixed reaction to Shelton’s words. “That was kind of dirty, but I will take it.”

Shelton’s comments were direct. Some would call them harsh. But were they true? Do the Jonas Brothers have more fans than Clarkson?

It’s hard to quantify how many fans any band or artist has. However, it’s fairly easy to quantify the number of albums a band or artist has sold.

Who sold more: the Jonas Brothers or Kelly Clarkson?

According to AXS, the Jonas Brothers have sold over 20 million albums. This is considerably more albums than the vast majority of musicians will ever sell. On the other hand, it’s not a tremendous number of records for a world-famous pop group.

Clarkson has done slightly better. Warner Music Group says she’s sold over 25 million albums. That’s more than the Jonas Brothers. Notably, Clarkson began her recording career a few years before the Jonas Brothers did.

So Clarkson has sold more albums than the Jonas Brothers. At the same time, both artists certainly have a huge number of fans who may have never purchased their albums. Was Shelton correct? The answer is not so clear.
