This Is Us has been piecing together the flash-forward at Kevin’s house since season 2. It started with Randall and Tess on their way to the home, and most recently, fans saw Nicky’s wife Edie arrive at the gathering. In all of the different flash-forward scenes we’ve seen over the past few seasons, Kate and Miguel haven’t been in any. And taking into account Rebecca’s decision in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 7, we might know why.

'This Is Us' Season 6 Episode 7 stars Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Mandy Moore, and Jon Huertas, in character as Kevin, Kate, Randall, Rebecca, and Miguel, gather at a table in the cabin. Kevin, Kate, and Randall sit at one end, while Rebecca and Miguel sit at the other end.

Rebecca made a choice in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 7

At the beginning of the Thanksgiving-themed This Is Us Season 6 Episode 7, Rebecca informed her kids that she wanted to speak with them following dinner. And no one was ready for what Rebecca told them.

In what was a powerhouse of a performance by Mandy Moore, Rebecca informed Kevin, Kate, and Randall that Miguel would be in charge of her medical decisions if she could no longer make them herself. Essentially, Miguel would have power of attorney. And if Miguel were not around to be in charge, Kate would step in for him.

The conversation clearly rattled the Big Three. And fans will see the ramifications from the emotional scene in the upcoming trilogy focusing on Kevin, Kate, and Randall. But it can’t be a coincidence that Rebecca chose Kate and Miguel to be the decision-makers in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 7, and they aren’t in the flash-forwards.

Rebecca’s decision in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 7 could spell trouble for Kate and Miguel

Since Kate and Miguel are the two main characters who fans have yet to spot in the This Is Us future scenes, many believe they could be dead.

Before the series confirmed that Kate and Toby would divorce, many believed that Kate’s death was why Toby wasn’t wearing a wedding ring in the flash-forwards. We now know that isn’t the case. Nevertheless, it’s still suspicious that Kate hasn’t appeared in the future. Plus, no one has made any direct mention of her. Toby did tell Randall that he talked to Jack and “They are on their way.”

Now, Toby could be referencing Jack and Kate. Or, perhaps he’s talking about Jack and Hailey. We have no further information about that, unfortunately.

And it’s very unsettling that Miguel hasn’t popped up in the future yet. He is Rebecca’s husband, and it seems as though the Pearson Family is gathering to say goodbye to her. She, unfortunately, appears to be on her death bed. So why isn’t Miguel by her side?

The fact that Rebecca chose Kate and Miguel to be the decision-makers in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 7 makes their absence in the future even more concerning. They should be the first people at the house. And yet they are nowhere to be seen. Perhaps they are no longer there, and Kevin took over caretaking responsibilities.

It would be heartbreaking if both Kate and Miguel were dead in the future. But This Is Us has been known to break a few hearts during its six-season run.

‘This Is Us’ writer and Jon Huertas comment on the Kate and Miguel theory

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, This Is Us Season 6 Episode 7 writer Laura Kenar addressed the absences of Kate and Miguel in the flash-forward scenes.

“I would say there’s a couple people we haven’t seen yet, including Kate,” she said. When pressed further, Kenar shared, “We’ll have to wait until we jump to another future scene with Kate if she’s there.”

And when People asked Jon Huertas when fans might see Miguel in the future scenes in This Is Us, he said, “We don’t get the scripts for the episodes until sometimes a week out. Dan [Fogelman] keeps us very much in the dark, keeps it close to the vest so that we don’t tell people like you what’s going to happen and get in trouble. So I’m not sure 100 percent sure of how the show ends … We will have to wait and see.”

This Is Us Season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
