The synopsis for This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11, “Saturday in the Park,” reads, “Rebecca and Miguel’s anniversary barbecue does not go as planned.”

The entire Pearson clan, including Randall and Beth’s family and Kevin, gather at Kate and Toby’s house for a barbecue to celebrate Rebecca and Miguel’s anniversary. And as fans know from the end of This Is Us Season 6 Episode 10, the Big Green Egg smoker has arrived just in time for the party. According to a flash-forward in episode 3 with Jack and Lucy, an accident involving the smoker happens on the day Kate and Toby decide to end their marriage.

But the impending incident isn’t the only problem in Kate and Toby’s marriage. This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9 highlighted that they are growing apart instead of together. Kate is thriving as a music teacher in Los Angeles, and Toby has success at his new job in San Francisco. The distance has significantly strained their marriage, and they constantly fight.

In the trailer for This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11, Rebecca asks young Jack, “Mommy and Daddy are mad a lot?” And he responds, “Yeah.” His grandmother tries to make him feel better and says, “Well, mommy’s and daddy’s fight sometimes, but it’s going to be OK.”

The preview also shows Kate crying and telling Randall, “Every day I wake up, and I think, ‘Today’s the day that Toby and I aren’t going to fight.'” He reassures, “You guys are going to make it through this.”

‘This Is Us’ cast and crew teases the emotional hour

During an interview with People, Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate, previewed what’s to come for Kate and Toby in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11.

“Well, there’s something aside from the Egg that occurs [at the party],” the actor teased. “Let’s just say it is not a normal party. I don’t know if the Pearsons can have a normal party if I’m honest. S**t always seems to hit the fan with the parties. When three or more Pearsons are gathered, s**t hits the fan. I think it’s because there’s a lot going on under the surface — resentments and stuff that goes on.”

Metz added, “There’s a particular incident that happens between Kate and Toby and Jack that really solidifies their decision of not moving forward.”

This Is Us executive producer Kay Oyegun also told Entertainment Weekly, “Episode 11, K.J. Steinberg [who wrote it], and Chris Koch [who directed it], and freaking Jonathan Kincaid [who plays Jack Jr.] put their foot in that episode. And I’m just like, ‘Look, audiences, prepare your butts.’ It’s a lot. I’m just like, ‘Kate! Toby! I’m praying for y’all!’ It’s a lot.”

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 11, “Saturday in the Park,” airs Tuesday, April 5, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
