Fans keeping up with NBC’s This Is Us over the years anticipate a sad end to the series. New photos for the episode show Kate’s missing as her mother’s dying, though her husband, Phillip, seemingly arrives on time.

‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 17, ‘The Train,’ likely features Rebecca’s death

Rebecca’s death is likely coming in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17, “The Train.” Mandy Moore said she threw up after reading the script for the penultimate episode, giving fans a clue of what’s to come. Additionally, the trailer for the episode shows an older Kevin and Randall Pearson being told that it’s time for them to make their final goodbyes, as Rebecca doesn’t have much time left.

“I well up thinking about it,” Mandy Moore told Entertainment Weekly about the episode, according to Yahoo. “It was a lot. This episode is definitely a lot more to take in than the actual finale, in my estimation. It’s going to be sad to say goodbye to this family and see these characters, but I think there’s a lot more wrapped up in ‘The Train.'”

Creator Dan Fogelman also talked about what fans can expect — and that’s a lot of tears. “I really found it incredibly beautiful and sprawling,” he noted. “Our collective group of writers and actors, they put picture to something that I think a lot of people have thought about.”

The This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17 trailer shows Kevin and Randall preparing to say goodbye to Rebecca, and their loved ones, like Beth and Sophie, also arrive. But where is Kate? The trailer shows she’s missing, and she’s also not in the most recent photos posted by NBC.

The photos show Rebecca’s loved ones gathering to say their goodbyes. Uncle Nicky arrives, as does Madison, Elijah, Beth, Sophie, Edie, and Toby. Phillip is also pictured in the photos — but he’s alone, looking solemn. This leaves fans to wonder why Phillip is with Rebecca and the Pearson family, but Kate isn’t. It’s also worth noting that Kate’s ex-husband, Toby, has multiple photos alone with Rebecca, as he seemingly says his goodbye. Once again, Kate is nowhere to be found.

Executive producer Isaac Aptaker promises fans will get answers about Kate. But it might take some time after This Is Us Season 6 Episode 17 for fans to learn everything that occurred. We believe the This Is Us Season 6 finale will bring Kate’s story full circle.

What do fans think happened to Kate? Many Reddit users think Kate tries to make it to Rebecca before Rebecca dies, but she fails. Others believe that the production team of the show is purposely misdirecting fans in the photos and promos to create intrigue.

“But why would Phillip be on time and not Kate?” a fan questioned. “That doesn’t even make sense … married, living together, taking the same ride.”

“There are two episodes left,” another fan noted. “There is no point in having her miss Rebecca’s death. You can’t explore how that affects her at all. She’ll get there late but on time. It’ll be fine.”

“Randall did say to Edie that it wasn’t going to be long and ‘everyone’s just trying to make it in time,'” another fan noted. “That’s the line I keep thinking of, like it was foreshadowing.”

This Is Us Season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
