‘This Is Us’ Writer Confirms Viewers Should ‘Expect the Unexpected’ as Season 6 Concludes
Viewers of This Is Us seem to have more questions than answers after season 6 episode 13, “Day of the Wedding.” Several key storylines remain open-ended as season 6 winds down, including a resolution to Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) love life. However, it appears fans should not fret as This Is Us writer Jon Dorsey, who wrote Kate and Phillip’s wedding day episode, confirms viewers should “expect the unexpected” as the final five episodes of season 6 unfold.
‘This Is Us’ writers methodically plan out each storyline
During the 2018 Television Critics Association summer press tour, writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger spoke of the challenges writers face in juggling storylines that contain moments from the past, present, and future.
Aptaker explained the method of storytelling the writer’s room uses, as reported by E! News.
“What’s so cool about the style of our show is that we can just sort of keep on growing and expanding out in time,” Aptaker shared.
“So we’ve been through many different generations with this family. Now that we’ve figured out our audience will go with us, they’re along for the ride; they’re really smart, they’re sophisticated, and we’re breaking all the rules.”
Berger concurred, “Each season, we know sort of the broad strokes of where we’re going. And then the exciting thing is episode by episode, sort of filling in the blanks with great stories. But we know our big stuff.”
Dorsey said ‘expect the unexpected’ as season 6 ends
As “Day of the Wedding” closed, viewers were confused about who Kevin connected with during the festivities surrounding Kate and Phillip’s (Chrissy Metz and Chris Geere) wedding.
Kevin is linked with longtime friend Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison), ex-wife Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), and wedding singer Arielle (Katie Lowes).
Dorsey told Entertainment Weekly that Kevin’s romantic twist will unfold during episode 14, “The Night Before the Wedding.”
“Kevin has had a lot of interesting love interests throughout the show’s life. Sophie is certainly one of them. Cassidy is certainly one of them. And we’re introducing a new potential love interest in this wedding singer, Arielle, a friend of Phillip’s,” Dorsey said.
“What I can say is these women are all potential suitors for Kevin. Fans will understand why in terms of Sophie and Cassidy — and hopefully, they’ll understand why Arielle is a potential suitor who could be perfect for Kevin as well [once] they’ve watched these two episodes. I would say: With This Is Us, always expect the unexpected.”
On ‘This Is Us,’ Kevin could finally find happiness
Throughout season 6, one talking point fans have debated is the open-ended style of Kevin’s love life.
Dorsey assured viewers that Kevin would “more or less” find his romantic life partner.
“Knowing that the show is so close to the end, I would suggest that this is more or less going to be an end game for Kevin romantically. But again, there are still five episodes left. So expect the unexpected,” he teased.
