The music icon didn’t attain major fame until middle age. So, what is Tina Turner’s age today? She’s 81 years old, as she was born on Nov. 26, 1939. And according to USA Today, she didn’t get her smash breakout success until she was 44 years old. It was Private Dancer, which featured such hits as “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain” that launched her to fame.

Prior to her solo album, she performed with Ike Turner’s band, Kings of Rhythm, in 1956, Britannica reports. She was around 17 years old at the time, and the band finally hit it big in 1960. Ike and Tina then married around 1962, but later divorced.

Tina didn’t just find success in music, either. She also made appearances in movies like Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. A greatest-hits compilation was put together in 2004 as well, and by 2013, she decided to leave the U.S. and become a citizen of Switzerland. In 2018, at the age of 79, Tina was awarded a Grammy for lifetime achievement.

Is Tina Turner still performing?

Tina Turner’s age might prevent her from performing today, as she’s no longer getting on stage. Her last concert series was back in 2009 with Tina: 50th Anniversary Tour.

“Tina! 50th Anniversary Tour was a concert tour by Tina Turner, her first concert tour in eight years, since her record-breaking Twenty Four Seven Tour,” Tina Turner Online explains. “Turner made the announcement on the Oprah Winfrey Show in late April 2008. She visited many countries throughout Europe and North America. Tina Turner states her inspiration for creating the tour was the success of her performance with Beyoncé Knowles at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.”

Tina talked to CBS’ Gayle King about her final tour, too.

“I got on that plane, Gayle, I took a deep breath and I said, ‘It’s over,'” Tina shared. “I really felt like it’s over. And I’m glad it’s over. And I went home.”

With Tina Turner’s age well into her 80s, did she have kids in her younger years? She has three kids — Ike Turner Jr., Michael Turner, and Ronnie Turner, who are alive today. Sadly, her son, Craig Turner, died, though he would’ve been the oldest of all of her kids.

According to Closer Weekly, Tina had Craig when she was just 18 years old with a saxophonist by the name of Raymond Hill. Their relationship didn’t last once she met Ike, though. After Tina and Ike tied the knot, she adopted the two kids he had with his ex-wife, Ike Jr. and Michael. Tina and Ike then had Ronnie.

As for Craig, he died by suicide in 2018. “I think Craig was lonely, that’s what I think really got him more than anything else,” Tina shared with King on CBS. “I have pictures all around of him smiling, and I think I’m sensing that he’s in a good place. I really do.”
