The Marvel universe has brought so many superheroes to the big screen for the first time, portrayed by marvelously talented actors.

One role that comic fans have seen prior to the MCU’s iteration, however, is Spider-Man. There were multiple depictions of the web-slinger on the big screen before Tom Holland got the role. The first person to do it was Tobey Maguire.

There have been rumors Maguire may return to the role in the next MCU Spider-Man film. Some reports say he’s still exhibiting behavior that one could use to label him as a “diva.”

Sam Raimi directed the first big-screen Spider-Man movie that came out in 2002. Maguire played Peter Parker with Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson and Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin.

The film had two sequels – Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 – that both also did well at the box office. Before Marvel and later DC moved to the concept of cinematic universes (and multiverses), superhero film series were largely stand-alone.

At the time Maguire’s Spider-Man films were out, the X-Men were also featured in their own hit movie series, and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy got underway.

Maguire drew rave reviews for his performance. While he was a bit older than Spider-Man is usually depicted in the comics, he was a natural fit for the part.

The rumored role of Tobey Maguire in the MCU

Rumors have circulated about Maguire and fellow big-screen Spider-Man alum Andrew Garfield returning to the role of Spider-Man for the MCU’s third Spider-Man film. It’s unclear exactly how they’ll be incorporated, but smart money says it has something to do with the MCU introducing the concept of multiverses.

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the concept of multiple timelines (and multiple Spider-Men) emerged. That film’s popularity seemed to pave the way to introduce this concept into the MCU. The multiverse concept may also help the MCU introduce other characters such as the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

So what role will Maguire play? The odds are good he’ll appear in a brief but impactful supporting role for Holland. Maguire had a great run as Peter Parker, but there’s no doubt who the role belongs to now. Holland’s great performance takes nothing away from Maguire’s, but the idea of the now-45-year-old Maguire returning for anything more than a glorified cameo is outside the realm of possibility.

The rumors that Tobey Maguire is still “a diva”

It’s been quite some time since Maguire last put on the red and blue outfit to swing from skyscraper to skyscraper on the New York skyline. That said, it appears as though all may not be well on the set of the latest Spider-Man film.

The site We Got This Covered reported that according to the inside source of “Marvel insider” Daniel Richtman, Maguire is acting like a “diva” on the set of the latest film. If the report is to be believed, Marvel is none too happy about this. It makes sense why they wouldn’t be – for this film to be successful, it needs all participants to be on the same page.

If the report is true, it wouldn’t be the first time Maguire was rumored to exhibit diva-like behavior onset of a Spider-Man movie. Screen Crush reported that Maguire attempted to delay the filming of Spider-Man 2. He claimed it was to rest his injured back, but it was more likely a power play for more money.

The studio responded by nearly hiring Jake Gyllenhaal before Maguire pulled a massive mea culpa to get back in their good graces.
