Madonna is a celebrity even among other celebrities. Many singers and artists, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga, have lauded the iconic megastar for her undeniable influence. As one of the world’s most recognizable faces, Madonna might be used to fans and admirers flocking towards her.

However, Tom Hardy revealed that he had the opposite reaction. When he first met Madonna, all he could do was hide from the pop star. And it was something he felt anyone in his position would’ve done.

Tom Hardy’s RocknRolla director, Guy Ritchie, was in a seven-year-long relationship with the Papa Don’t Preach singer. The pair were first united in 1999 through the wife of rock legend Sting, who played cupid for the future married couple. The two hit it off quickly and officiated their relationship with a marriage in the year 2000. However, their marriage didn’t last, and in 2008 the two got a divorce.

“I enjoyed my first marriage. It’s definitely not something I regret. The experience was ultimately very positive,” Ritchie said according to HuffPost. “But you move on, don’t you? You’re right, I stepped into a soap opera, and I lived in it for quite a long period of my life. I’ll probably be more eloquent on it 10 years from now.”

RocknRolla was one of the last films Ritchie shot while he was still with Madonna, as the film was in production in 2007 before being released in 2008. Through Ritchie, Venom star Tom Hardy accidentally came face to face with the queen of pop. And he had a very interesting reaction to the encounter.

Fans react in all sorts of ways when they come face to face with someone they idolize. But Hardy didn’t get close to Madonna as some fans might have done. Instead, the Inception actor chose to hide from the singer. According to Contactmusic, Hardy revealed that he was in such awe of Madonna, that he couldn’t even handle being in the singer’s presence.

“She left me starstruck,” Hardy said. “I did what anyone who can’t deal with the situation does: I went and hid in the Range Rover. I was sort of prepping for the scene in there and someone said hello to me and it was her – she’d somehow managed to get in the back of it!”

Hardy was later able to muster up enough courage to actually talk to his idol. However, he doesn’t remember the conversation.

“Then we had a conversation, which I’ve completely blacked out because there she was like the Mother Mary in the boot (back) of the f—ng Range Rover and I was completely starstruck.”

Tom Hardy didn’t see Madonna as a sexual creature

For clarification, Hardy asserted that he didn’t react this way because he was attracted to her. On the contrary, Madonna just didn’t appeal to the actor at the time.

“She’s just someone’s mum to me and she looks like a ghost,” Hardy said. “I didn’t see her as a sexual creature. There was a time when I really would’ve gone there but since (she appeared in) the Justin Timberlake video, leaping over cars and things, I just think: ‘Enough now.’”
