Tom Hiddleston already stole every Marvel movie that Loki was in. Now he’s the star of his own series on Disney+. A lot of newcomers to the MCU join Loki, and Hiddleston had to catch them up. The actor shared how his “Loki Lecture” series brought them up to speed.

Hiddleston was on a Zoom press conference with costar Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Wunmi Mosaku on June 7. The cast all shared their experience with the Loki Lectures.

When was the last time Loki was seen in ‘The Avengers’?

The show picks up where Avengers: Endgame left off. However, Avengers: Endgame was the sixth Marvel movie appearance of the character. Hiddleston had to bring Owen Wilson, who plays Time Variance Authority agent Mobius, up to speed.

“Tom very generously and patiently kind of taking me through the whole MCU mythology and Loki,” Wilson said. “We’re calling them the Loki Lectures, letting me ask questions. I think that was really important and really helpful to our dynamic once we started filming those scenes because some of our conversations, when we were going over that stuff, would work its way in. So that was really helpful to me going to Loki school before we began.”

Hiddleston took the Loki Lectures seriously.

“It was such an interesting time to try to compress the experience of my time in the MCU in six movies,” Hiddleston said. “Mobius is an expert in Loki. He knows more about Loki than Loki does so I was trying to help Owen with some of my memories about my experience. Owen asked such insightful, intelligent questions that made me rethink various aspects of the character.”

A ‘Loki Lecture’ on his horns

Hiddleston said summarizing all six of his Marvel movie appearances made hiim appreciate the contributions of each filmmaker. Kenneth Branagh directed the first Thor with costume designer Alexandra Byrne and production designer Bo Welch. Charles Wood production designed and Mayes C. Rubeo did costumes for subsequent Thor movies.

“All of these people who contributed to Loki’s story, things like why his costume changes or their adaptations to his choreography or changes in the dramatic arc,” Hiddleston said. “I hope that when the show unfolds, the specificity or precision about these different aspects of Loki might become clearer.”

“There was a question of when does Loki wear the horns, why does he wear them?” Hiddleston said. “Is it a ceremonial thing or were they somehow an extension of some emotional intention, that he’s particularly malevolent at those times? It was kind of interesting to be asked these questions from outside the experience. All will become clear in time.”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Wunmi Mosaku missed Tom Hiddleston’s talks

Mbatha-Raw said she was home in London when Hiddleston was giving lectures. She said Hiddleston filled her in on set.

“I missed it but I know Tom helped me with some pronunciation of a few things,” Mbatha-Raw said. “It’s great just to have Tom on hand as our leader encyclopedia.”

Mosaku also missed the lectures. She said she did her homework watching the Marvel films and also spoke with Hiddleston on set.

“Tom filled me in on Loki,” Mosaku said. “I guess I didn’t go to school. I got some gossip though.”
