Kristen Stewart is one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actresses, a former child star who rose to popularity after being cast as Bella Swan in the Twilight film franchise. The films not only helped Stewart become a star, but they helped propel her to the top of the pop culture scene, with millions of fans all over the world.

In addition to the fame and fortune that she received from acting as Bella, the Twilight franchise helped to connect Stewart to one of her all-time great loves — her co-star, actor Robert Pattinson. Still, the course of romance never ran smoothly for the pair, and even before they had made a real love connection, the director who worked with them on Twilight reportedly warned Pattinson against dating Stewart.

In 2007, fans of Stephanie Meyers’ book series Twilight were thrilled when it was announced that Stewart would be acting as Bella Swan in the film adaptation of the books. Stewart, a promising young actor who had appeared in a number of high-profile productions, had never helmed such a major motion picture — but her intensity and brooding good looks promised great things.

At Stewart’s side was Pattinson, an English actor. Twilight was Pattinson’s big breakout role, and for millions of fans, the young actor was the perfect Edward Cullen. When the film was released in 2008, it received glowing reviews from fans, many of whom called out the chemistry between the two lead actors.

Why did the director of ‘Twilight’ warn Robert Pattinson against dating Kristen Stewart?

As it turns out, the magic that sparked between Pattinson and Stewart on the set of Twilight was no accident. The two formed an immediate connection and began dating, although they opted to never directly confirm their relationship to the media.

Still, their romance was an open secret, and years after Pattinson and Stewart split, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke opened up about how the young actors had chemistry right from the start. In fact, Hardwicke claimed that she warned Pattinson against dating Stewart right after their first audition together.

“I remember I told Rob, separately, I went, ‘Listen, man, you gotta remember that she’s under 18 and in our country, you can get in trouble! He went, ‘Okay, okay, jeez, calm down!’… It was funny because they were both pretty shy and kind of a little bit nervous and awkward,” Hardwicke described. “I said, ‘Okay, let’s go do the biology scene where you guys first meet.’ So we went to my kitchen table for that scene and you could see pretty quickly that they were vibing off of each other.:

Clearly, Stewart and Pattinson didn’t take their esteemed director’s advice, for they began dating around the time that the first Twilight film was released. For several years, they were able to conduct their love affair under the radar. In 2012, their romance was threatened when Stewart was linked to Rupert Sanders, a married director.

Still, Stewart and Pattinson were able to mend fences, going on to date for another year before finally breaking up. These days, both Stewart and Pattinson are with other people, but there are likely many fans who will never forget those exciting early days when “Robsten” was very much a thing.
