On May 4, Stephenie Meyer announced she will release the long-awaited book Midnight Sun, which is Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective. The Twilight fandom can’t wait for the new book, and a large majority of fans want Robert Pattinson to narrate the audiobook for Midnight Sun.

Stephenie Meyer delayed the release of ‘Midnight Sun’

Originally, Meyer planned to release Midnight Sun years ago as a companion piece to the Twilight series. However, the first few chapters of the book leaked online, leading Meyer to indefinitely halt the release.

Back in 2008, she released a statement on her website:

“I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being.

So, where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die.”

Why Stephenie Meyer chose to release the book now

On May 4, Meyer published a new statement on her website explaining why she’s choosing to release Midnight Sun this year.

Meyer wrote:

“I hope this announcement doesn’t seem ill-timed; I really considered delaying the release until the world was back to normal. However, 1) who knows when that will be? And 2) you guys have waited long enough. Much longer than long enough, actually.

I don’t know how everyone else is coping, but right now books are my main solace and happiest escape. Personally, I would be nothing but delighted if one of my favorite authors announced something new for me to read. (No pressure, Laini Taylor.) So, I hope this announcement gave you some pleasure and something fun to look forward to.”

Robert Pattinson originally did not like the ‘Twilight’ franchise

While Pattinson starred as Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, the actor originally did not have positive feelings about the character or the subject matter. Throughout his years in the role, Pattinson frequently made his distaste for Twilight known and discussed his anxiety about being part of such a huge phenomenon.

“There’s nothing you can do about it. That’s the way it is,” he said in a 2011 interview with Vanity Fair. “But it is weird being part of that, kind of representing something you don’t particularly like …”

Since the popularity surrounding Twilight has died down some, Pattinson has warmed toward the franchise.

“It’s lovely now that the mania is not so intense,” he told USA Today. “People come up (to me) and just have very fond memories of it. It’s a really sweet thing. I think the only scary part was right in the thick of it all, when it was very, very intense. Now the intensity has died down and it’s just very warm memories.”

Fans really want Robert Pattinson to voice the ‘Midnight Sun’ audiobook

After Meyer’s announcement, social media was filled with excitement from fans. Even with Pattinson’s previous negative comments about the series, fans made it clear they want him to record the audiobook for Midnight Sun.

“I don’t care how much you need to pay him have Robert Pattinson narrate the audio book but with the same energy he has when he talks about the movies,” wrote a Twitter user.

“I hope robert pattinson is ready to record midnight sun’s audio book,” another fan tweeted.

One fan tweeted, “I desperately want Robert Pattinson to narrate the audio book version of Midnight Sun, and I want it to include his hilarious, scathing commentary.”
