Robert Pattinson is no stranger to playing extraordinary characters. The actor recently wrapped his first film as Batman, but he’s been playing mythical roles for more than a decade. One the of actor’s very first roles was portraying teenage wizard, Cedric Diggory, in the Harry Potter films. A few years later, he would go on to play the brooding, humane, vampire, Edward Cullen, in the Twilight movies.

Being in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies helped Robert Pattinson navigate ‘Twilight’ fame

Nabbing a role in Harry Potter certainly helped Pattinson navigate the fame that Twilight would bring him. While the characters were wildly different, playing Cedric allowed the actor to experience a whirlwind of attention. And that’s not the only thing that the New Moon star took from one project to the next. Pattinson actually threw in a sneaky character choice in Twilight that was a callback to his role in Harry Potter.

Fans of both franchises will recall that both Edward and Cedric seem to have an affinity for trees. In fact, Cedric makes his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by surfacing from a tree. In an interview with GQ, Pattinson admitted that his characters materializing out of trees was something he dreamt up.

“It was definitely my concept to jump out of the tree at the beginning, for my intro, which I then kind of repeated later on in Twilight,” Pattinson recalled. “For some reason, I always have a suggestion to be like, ‘Why doesn’t he just appear just jumping out of a tree?”

Filming the tree scenes was very technical

Twilight fans will, of course, recall Edward jumping out of a tree while he is in the meadow with Bella. Later on in their relationship, he climbs up a tree with her on his back in a bid to show her some of his lifestyle. Of course, actually filming the latter scene was a bit more challenging than filming his tree scene in Harry Potter.

While movie magic made it look like Pattinson and his Twilight co-star, Kristen Stewart, were really scaling trees, in reality, they were not. Instead, the pair were on a very tall platform to give the illusion that they’d climbed to great heights. The pair also had to wear uncomfortable harnesses for their safety. In an interview with Chuck the Movie Guy, Stewart got candid about the logistics of her tree scene with Pattinson.

Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were harnessed together for days

“I mean, we were on a platform, and we were also like on a cliff, which gave the illusion of being in a tree, like, really like, up at the top of the tree, even though, we weren’t,” Stewart revealed about filming Twilight. “Um, and there was like, a couple of days of being in a harness, attached to Rob.”

The tree scenes may have been difficult to shoot, but we’re sure many Twilight fans appreciated it. And fans of Harry Potter likely appreciate Pattinson’s callback to his first iconic role.
