Though it’s been years since Robert Pattinson portrayed sparkly vampire, Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, fans are still interested in his iconic role. Considering that all five films are currently available via streaming and Stephenie Meyer recently released, Midnight Sun, the long-anticipated retelling of Twilight from Edward’s perspective, Twilight mania is once again on the rise.

Despite the popularity of the Twilight movies, Pattinson has never been shy about voicing how strange he found the storylines to be. For example, The Batman star has famously pointed out that he finds it odd that his character, who is well over 100 years old, would willingly repeat high school numerous times and pursue a relationship with a teenage girl. But Edward’s age is hardly the only thing that Pattinson found bizarre about his beloved character.

Robert Pattinson reflects on his ‘Twilight’ character

One thing that Pattinson found pretty unbelievable was the acceptance that Edward had for Bella’s relationship with Jacob Black. Certainly, he has moments of being controlling, like when he deliberately takes Bella’s truck out of commission so she can’t visit Jacob; but, for the most part, he is accepting of their relationship. In a 2011 interview with Entertainment Weekly Magazine, Pattinson recalled one of the moments that he found most unbelievable in the Twilight movies.

“There’s certain things…like when Jacob grabs her arms and won’t let go,” Pattinson began about the scene in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 where Jacob is angered by the idea that Bella and Edward are planning to be intimate before she gets turned into a vampire. “And that’s at our wedding, before I’ve even danced with her! If that was reality, being a good man at that moment is going up and kicking the guy’s a*s so hard that he won’t come back.”

Pattinson shared one of Edward’s heroic character traits

Pattinson continued on to share that Edward was truly a strange character because he didn’t react to things the way a typical man would. This made it challenging for Pattinson to act out certain scenes in the Twilight movies. However, the actor added that Edward’s atypical reactions are part of what made the vampire seem heroic.

“Edward has a lot more foresight than the average person, which is one of the most heroic things about him,” the Twilight star shared about coping with Jacob’s love of Bella. “He also knows he’s going to turn her into a vampire, so it’s like, ‘You’re going to be screwed in a couple of weeks, buddy! Try and hit on her all you want!”

Why ‘The Batman’ star called his character a pus*y

For all of Edward’s strengths, Pattinson admits that his character has some weaknesses as well. “Look, there are a lot of moments when Edward sort of acts like a pus*y,” the actor added. “I mean, throughout the whole series.” One moment, in particular, that the Twilight star cited is when Bella and Jacob are blatantly flirting with one another while Edward is sitting there coping with the sickness that his unborn child is causing Bella.

“I’m sitting next to you and I’m like, ‘My wife is dying. I have completely fuc*ed my life up and hers,” and Jacob’s like [to Bella], ‘Hey, baby, you don’t look too bad to me.’ And I’m just sitting there, like, with a bucket collecting vomit,” Pattinson recalled. According to the Twilight star, that moment couldn’t have happened if Edward wasn’t so passive. “That really wouldn’t happen,” the actor shared. “I should have thrown the vomit at him.”

Edward always comes out on top in the ‘Twilight’ movies

Clearly, Pattinson had some issues with the way Edward dealt with Bella’s love for Jacob in the Twilight movies. But, considering everything eventually worked out in Edward’s favor, those feelings are kind of moot.
