Whether audiences prefer the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Extended Universe, many viewers still stay up-to-date with both franchises. The most recent installment in the DCEU is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Many potential titles are joining the franchise in the coming years at various stages of development. However, 2022 already has release slots locked for a few DC Comics characters to hit the silver screen.

The Batman has a theatrical release date of March 4. Director Matt Reeves took over the project after Ben Affleck’s exit. Warner Bros. announced that actor Robert Pattinson is the new Batman. The cast also includes Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano as the Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman.

A teaser trailer highlights the film’s dark tone and Batman’s new appearance. There have been rumors that the movie would exist outside of the DCEU, similar to Joker. The studio has not confirmed if Reeves’ vision will end up connecting to the greater DCEU.

Johnson will be starring in a spinoff of the DCEU’s Shazam! titled Black Adam. He will be teaming up with The Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra. The film is supposedly crashing into theaters on July 29. Other notable cast members include Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate.

Black Adam‘s lead character is an anti-hero that will undoubtedly connect into Shazam!‘s story. The studio has not confirmed any plot details. The film has a precise fit into the DCEU moving forward. Variety reported on July 17 that Black Adam has wrapped on production.

How does ‘The Flash’ movie fit into the DCEU?

A solo film for The Flash is speeding into theaters on Nov. 4. Ezra Miller first appeared as the title character in Justice League. Director of It Andy Muschietti is bringing the film to life from a screenplay by Christina Hodson.

Warner Bros. has not confirmed many details surrounding the film. However, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the story would cover a specific arc from the comics. The story will see the Flash destroying the timeline as a result of trying to rescue his mother in the past. The cast is rounded out with Maribel Verdú as Nora, Ron Livingston as Henry, and Ben Affleck as Batman.

The final DC movie of 2022 is the sequel titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Wan is returning to direct the DCEU film with a Dec. 16 release date. However, Rotten Tomatoes speculates that the film may end up switching to a 2023 release date. The release date is a bit dangerously close to The Flash.

Aquaman may not connect as closely with the other DC films, given the underwater setting. However, it will build upon the title character’s previously established mythology. Jason Momoa is returning alongside Amber Heard as Mera. Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are also set to reprise their roles from the first film.

While all of the films mentioned above are DC-related, they may not all end up connecting to the DCEU. Joker has proven that Warner Bros. is willing to experiment outside of its scattered continuity. Some of these release dates may change due to the unpredictable nature of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, any major delays could have an impact on the 2023 DC slate.
