In History’s Vikings, Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) is the first son of the great Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). His father may be the most famous Viking to ever live, but Bjorn is well on his way to surpassing that accomplishment.

All the sons of Ragnar become famous in their own right, but none of them can top Bjorn Ironside, the first son of Ragnar Lothbrok. His father even gives him the nickname Ironside when no swords can wound him in battle.

Bjorn tries more than anything to prove himself and make his father proud. He goes off into the wilderness alone to find himself, and his father is sure he will fail. However, he comes back stronger than ever. He even kills a man sent to kill him as well as a giant bear.

Alexander Ludwig reveals Bjorn Ironside’s main goal in life

In 2015, Alexander Ludwig spoke with the press in promotion of a new season of the series. Collider reported the interview and Ludwig was asked what Bjorn’s main goal is. It won’t surprise fans to learn that Bjorn wants to make Ragnar proud and exceed what his father has already managed to accomplish.

“I think that he’s truly been inspired by what his father’s been able to accomplish,” Ludwig explained. “Like any son of a father, they want to make their father proud. Especially amongst this family, there is a certain amount of aspiration to not only fulfill what his father has accomplished, but to accomplish even more than what his father ever could. That’s one thing that they really pride themselves on. That was how their legend lived on.”

Bjorn becomes King of Kattegat, just like his father

Ragnar makes a name for himself when he sails west and finds England. He then makes his way from farmer to king, and that’s a lot to aspire to, especially for his sons. Bjorn Ironside shows early on that he’s a brilliant warrior and the strong silent type just like his father. He eventually takes back Kattegat from his brother and takes his rightful place as King of Kattegat.

Bjorn’s reign isn’t as easy as it might seem. He’s constantly comparing himself to his father and wondering what Ragnar would do if he was in his position. It makes it hard for Bjorn to know what’s right when he’s constantly wondering what his father would think or do. He’s haunted by this predicament and it doesn’t make anything easier.

Bjorn is just like his father in numerous ways. He’s a quiet thinker and he anticipates what his enemies will do next. However, he also has a tendency to treat the women in his life poorly, just like his father did. He cheats on his wife and even marries the other woman so he now has two wives in season 6.

It’s still unclear whether or not Bjorn made it out alive in the battle against the Rus Vikings in season 6. He was stabbed by what looked like Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen), his brother. Fans will hopefully learn the truth in season 6B of Vikings.
