What happens to King Harald Finehair after the attack by the Rus Vikings?

Fans will probably recall that Harald is far from a good guy. He’s a manipulator and a rapist. He was a problem during the time of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) too, who never fully trusted him. When Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) comes to power, it’s even worse, as Harald wants what Bjorn has. He masterly manipulates his way to becoming the King of Norway, but that won’t save him when the Rus Vikings come with Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen). During the first wave of fighting, Harald is hurt, and eventually taken prisoner by the Rus along with King Olaf (Steven Berkoff). But Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky) lets him live and kills Olaf, but Harald actually escapes.

Bjorn finds a way to save his country when he appears still alive after spreading a rumor that he’s already dead. The Rus retreat when Bjorn shows up on his horse and is shot by three arrows but continues to live at the time. But he dies and is given a lavish burial. Harald shows up just as Bjorn’s widows, Gunnhild (Ragga Ragnars) and Ingrid (Lucy Martin), are going up against each other to determine who will rule Kattegat. He takes his place again as King and ruler of Kattegat and all Norway. Plus, he intends to marry both of them. Ingrid accepts, even though Harald sexually assaulted her before the battle. But Gunnhild dies by suicide when she believes she’s going to Valhalla to be with Bjorn.

Now with a new wife, Harald is ruling Kattegat unopposed. Then Ivar and Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) show back up after they fought against them all with the Rus. People don’t give them a warm welcome, as you might imagine, but Harald allows them to stay, and convinces the people to accept them as his supporters.

When Ivar gets the idea that they should go back to Wessex to fight King Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), Harald chooses to go with them, leaving Ingrid and Erik the Red (Eric Johnson) as joint rulers. However, in episode 19 of season 6B, the first battle is cut short when a heavy fog hinders the view, so everyone falls back. Harald is wandering around in the fog on the battlefield, and a lone Wessex soldier finds him.

Harald is stabbed and falls to the ground. The man tells him he’s dying, and Harald just says, “Valhalla.”

“Valhalla?” he questions. “There’s no such place. You will die here alone, and forgotten.”

Suddenly, Harald sees his brother Halfdan (Jasper Pääkkönen), whom he killed years earlier. “Hello brother,” Halfdan says. “I’ve come to take you to Valhalla. The Allfather is waiting.”

“Brother,” Harald replies. Halfdan helps him up, and when the soldier manages to disarm Harald of his sword, Harald stabs him with a dagger, killing him. The King of Norway falls back, and his brother is again there singing a song. They sing it together, and Harald dies.

Ingrid ends up ruling after him in Kattegat after she has Erik killed. King Harald Finehair didn’t survive the final season of Vikings, but he dies fighting.
